I have faced many an awkward moment turning up to work wearing exactly what my colleague was wearing . The urban dictionary even has a phrase for it - Involuntary Uniform Syndrome. More recently, I have been on the lookout to find some pieces of clothing from exclusive textile designers and not venture out to the regular retail stores.
This quest lead me to Omila, a textile designer, and her beautiful art work on natural fabric.
Omila has an interest in Shibori dyeing, Miura artwork and eco-dyeing to name a few. She creates scarves and wraps of various colours using these techniques and each one of them is a unique piece. Omila's creations are on cloth made of natural fabric like silk, cotton, Rayon, Silk-cotton, Muslin, georgette to name a few.
Eco dyeing – In the technique the dye is made from eucalyptus or other plants like Oak. It is a colour from nature and the most natural form of fabric dye. Omila's designs are very earthy, some have leaf imprints, stem and bark imprints and the colours are very natural. The designs on silk scarves are breathtaking. It serves as a perfect accessory to uplift any coloured top or dress.
Shibori art is a Japanese technique of stitching or binding cloth and dyeing the same. Miura and Arashi are shibori techniques of dyeing which you will see in the display. Scarves with Shibori design are bright and very stylish. Each scarf may have around 1500 knots that help create the design and you can be rest assured it will be one of a kind.
Custom orders can be placed for longer pieces of fabric with the artwork and design on it, which can then be used to create dresses or apparel. Or if you are looking for a perfect scarf to go with a particular dress, you can request for a custom made scarf with your choice of design and colours. How's that for being original and creative? The scarves also make unique gifts. If you like the work, go to the Facebook page to keep track of the latest collection and the new additions.
