Event:
A public lecture by renowned UK artist Ryan Gander will be held at the State Library of Victoria Conference Centre on Tuesday 2nd June from 6pm to 7.30pm. The lecture coincides with the major exhibition Ryan Gander: Read Only presented at Australian Centre for Contemporary Art from 4 June - 2 August, 2015.

Monash University Museum of Art and Monash Art, Design and Architecture, in association with Australian Centre for Contemporary Art will be co-presenting the lecture, which will be introduced by Charlotte Day, Director, Monash University Museum of Art. A discussion and Q&A with Hannah Matthews, Associate Curator, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art will follow.

Born in Chester in 1976, Ryan Gander who lives and works in London, has established an international reputation through artworks that materialise in many different forms. Gander studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten and the Jan van Eyck Akademie and has exhibited extensively internationally, including Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2010), Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2009) and Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (2009).

Gander's early works established him as an interactive artist and his multimedia artworks encompass a vast array of forms, including architecture, design, sculpture, city planning, children's books, language and performance. His works revolve around the nature of art and objects and express complex narratives, a network of multiple connections.

"There are many things that are important to my work. You could say that dance is important, or that script writing is important or fictional futures. There are literally hundreds of subjects and also a multitude of ways in which works evolve into real things in the world, so let's not only focus on design. I am interested in stories, and in the way that objects can act as vessels for these stories, and relate to important twentieth century designer-architects." (Ryan Gander, interview with Timothée Chaillou, 2012).
