Who doesn't love trains? Especially the older style with their steam or diesel engines with timber carriages rattling down the tracks. I still remember having to close my eyes, hold my breath and turn away from the whoosh of wind and dirt as the carriages came to a stop at the station. If you love all things train-related and you love a great cup of coffee, then I have the perfect pit stop for you. Located at the historic Gympie Train Station where the Mary Valley Rattler is based, you will find the Rusty Rails Café.

I'd just finished an hour or so of browsing through antiques and retro classics across the road at 3rdHand Treasures Antiques Store. Check out my review of this amazing treasure trove. I was about to hit the road back to Brisbane and wanted something substantial but yummy to keep me going. The menu at the Rusty Rails Café certainly hit the spot. Previously known as the Platform 1 Café, this place offers a slice of history along with your slice of cake.

As you enter the car park, which had plenty of spaces on the day I visited, you can see the platform and old carriages in the background along the train lines. The bobbing heads of geranium flowers in their hanging pots along the length of the platform provided beautiful colour.

Located inside the old station building, the café is open and spacious. Some tables are actually booth seats from the train carriages. I also spied handcars converted into coffee tables.

The staff were very friendly and efficient and happy to help me make my selection. I was impressed they had oat milk for my coffee and proudly told me they have at least five types of milk on offer. I pondered for far too long whether to have the long doughnut loaded with fresh cream and locally made cherry jam. In the end, I decided on the warm date scones and a savoury muffin. The muffin was light, full of flavour and topped with locally made tomato chutney. The scones were deliciously fresh too. Nothing worse than a rock hard scone, right?

There is a display cabinet of yumminess as well as a menu for breakfast, brunch and lunch including pizzas plus they are licensed. The chutney and many other locally made items are available to buy at the gift shop.

I think Gympie will be featuring a little more in my travels. If you're a local or visiting, make sure you enjoy the coffee and sustenance at the Rusty Rails Café in Gympie.
