Gourmet Cafe Breakfast with a Modern Twist
During our short visit to Melbourne, we discovered there were many wonderful hidden laneways in Melbourne. The best thing about these discoveries usually resulted in delicious meals. In this particular journey, Rustica Canteen was our reward!
Pretty and delicate gourmet cafe food at Melbourne
Rustica Canteen is hidden down Guildford Lane and visitors, like us, had to rely on Google navigation system to locate this hole in the wall. The cafe exterior may looks unassuming but it hides something pretty special inside. Let me say up front, Rustica Canteen is much more than an ordinary coffee shop.
The moment we entered this cafe, my friends were immediately drawn to the impressive display of delicious pastries. I, on the other hand, have already done my research so I insisted on having a proper sit-down breakfast.
There was plenty of natural light filtering through the windows and we settled down quite comfortably in one of the wooden tables.
Their hip and trendy ingredients sounded wonderful and impressive. Okay, they may have sounded slightly pretentious but, this is Melbourne, I expect individuality and creativity! If every cafe serves the same traditional Big Breakfast, then there would be no incentive to stand out from the crowd.
Chili scrambled eggs w bacon, spring onion, manchego cheese on sourdough $17
My friend chose the chili scrambled eggs and he was completely wowed by the deliciousness of this dish. I had a biteful and it was amazing. The eggs were creamy and delicious with a good kick of chili. The smoky bacon pieces added flavour while the spring onion added freshness. The chef certainly did not skimp on the delicious manchengo cheese. Eggs on toast has never tasted this flavourful!
Despite it was a bit too early in the day for vodka cured trout, I just could not resist. The description sounded too wonderful to be true. The cured ocean trout was beautifully presented in a fine-dining style and I was amazed at the generous portion size of the ocean trout. This dish makes Sydney cafe food look average in comparison!
The taste was simply divine, with tender moist cured ocean trout with a subtle hint of vodka with contrasted with a crispy skin. The poached eggs were just perfect. Everything just seemed to work really well with each other. I would not have minded to start my day with this kind of pleasing dish.
Brioche French Toast, fig, raspberries, cinnamon mascarpone, toasted almonds $16
I also chose the Brioche French Toast and it was a stunning pretty breakfast dish to have! The serving size was generous and the visual presentation was just delightful. The soft brioche toast tasted heavenly with fresh fig, ripe raspberries and creamy cinnamon mascarpone. This could be one of the best French toasts I have had this year!
We enjoyed all three dishes immensely! It was a really pleasant brunching experience.
I wanted the Ispahan Croissant the moment I saw it. The twice baked butter croissant was laced with sweet rose water, lychee syrup, almond and raspberry jam. It was not too sweet and very refreshing at the same time.
Cronut $6.50 (Laminated Butter Pastry Deep Fried then filled and topped w seasonal flavours)
It is clear that Rustica Canteen is exactly what the locals ordered. The Breakfast menu is available all day and the serving sizes are generous. Each dish is decently priced as it is located in the CBD. Most importantly, the taste and the visual plating for these dishes were absolutely beautiful.
