Russell's Pizza Willunga is a boutique wood fire pizza restaurant in Willunga, a modest 40kms from the Adelaide CBD. Do not let the distance deter you; this place is an incredible experience. A rustic paradise from the moment you enter the garden and watch as the smoke rises from log fires dotted around the entrance. The candle lit cottage and the large shed 'ballroom' out the back where wood and corrugated iron and brick are the norm, the casual relaxed experience suits the region and the experience as a whole.
Chef Russell Jeavons uses local fresh produce to create his unique regionally inspired wood-fired pizzas.
Russell's Pizza is fully licensed with a brilliant showing of local wines. Guests are more than welcome to BYO, corkage fees do apply. There are also individual purchasing options for pizzas starting from $20 or alternately there is a two-course option for $30, which includes an entree and pizza plus the $7 BYO corkage charge or three-course option, which includes as above plus desert.
The menu has a strong opening with its entrees. You can get the amazingly great meatballs with a fantastic yoghurt sauce, fresh wood fired bread with dukkah and balsamic vinegar or an incredibly fresh salad. The salad is crisp with beautiful olives and roasted almonds dotted around fresh garden salads. The bread is warm and inviting and the meatballs are a small piece of meaty delight.
We come to the main event, the big moment. The pizza menu – It has your classic favourite's seafood, ham, and pineapple, Napoli and Supreme. These are all prepared on thin-crusted pizza bases with the freshest ingredients in your traditional round pizza style.
Now the cream of the crop that most definitely rises to the top are the Chilli Chicken Turkish and Lamb Turkish pizzas. They take longer to cook as they are prepared and served in a canoe type shape and are cooked slower in the pizza ovens. Nevertheless, I am telling you they are well worth the wait.
The Lamb Turkish has slow cooked lamb, fresh tomato, pickled lime, dukkah and mint with rich yoghurt drizzled over the top.
The Chilli Chicken Turkish has chicken, garlic, pickled lime, fresh tomato and Coriander again with rich yoghurt drizzled over the top.
Now if you do still have room left (which is a challenge) there is a lovely dessert menu including chocolate cakes, apple strudel, and delicious fruits. The dessert menu does vary depending on season.
This rustic delight is a true treasure for Adelaideians and I cannot recommend it more highly. It is recommended that bookings be made in advance as it is only open Friday and Saturday 6pm until 11.30pm and seats 100 guests.
Went to a wedding reception there a little while back and had the best time...the atmosphere was amazing, the pizzas delicious... would recommend Russell's Pizza to anyone out and about for a drive or interested in having a great pizza.
