So much to sew at Russell's
I was walking along the road in Sandgate, and there, tucked away, I found the most amazing shop.
It was Russell's Fabrics, which has been in operation since before I was a teenager! It started in 1955 and is such a great place to buy fabric that it is still bubbling along successfully.
If anyone interested in sewing, it is the "must go to" place for unusual and different fabrics. The photos will give some indication. And there are all sorts of other items for sewing - pins, needles, lace and the list goes on.
For such a small shop, it manages to have an extensive range of fabric, and all neatly on display, and a big plus is the helpful and friendly staff!
I came away with some delightful fabric to make a skirt for summer, but I have no doubt I will be back soon to get some more. I was so excited by the range of fabrics. Yes, really excited. It is a hidden gem!
It is open for business Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4.30 pm, on Saturdays from 9 am to 12.30 pm.
So head over to Sandgate - it's not far from the train station, or if you drive there's usually plenty of parking in the park opposite the shop on Brighton Road, Sandgate.
Why not make a day of it? It's not far from the beach, and there are plenty of cafe's to stop for lunch!
Gee it's sad to see so many fabric stores closed now. There use to be many in Brisbane but now I think we have three. Russells is an Aladdin's cave. I'm sure they still have fabric there from when they opened in the 1950's if you dig a little. I've found such wonderful fabric there over the years. The staff are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. It's a fun shop to explore. Dianne.
