I've said it before and I'll say it again: the best comedy comes from telling the truth. Perhaps that's why, for my money, Russell Brand is one of the best stand up acts in the world. His dedication to truth telling, especially in recent years, has seen him butt heads with right wing media, corporations and politicians, much to my personal amusement and their frustration. Now he's bringing his left wing verbal head butts to Australia for a tour that's sure to get a lot of ladies frothing at the panties.

You see, Brand's got a huge female following, all desperate to get their hands on the lizard hipped lothario's leather pants. Despite his chequered past - the drugs, the women, the debauchery, the men, the even more drugs, the marrying of Katy Perry and dumping of aforementioned pop singer via text two years later – there's still something of a sexy rock star aura around the 39 year old.

It's too easy to dismiss Brand's fame as being based on his ability to make women weak at the knees. His success is more about his charm, charisma, sense of humour and bravely brutal honesty. Plus, there really is talent hiding under that black eyeliner, crazy hair and rock star jewellery. Brand is a star of stand-up comedy, film, and TV, he's an author, and he's been a newspaper columnist, a producer and a radio announcer.

While many with his level of stardom might deny their past proclivities, truth-teller Russell incorporates his alcoholism, drug use, his mistakes, failures and sex life in his material. His fans continue to lap it up, while his detractors are unable to weaponise his past against him, since it's Brand who fires the hardest shots at himself.



These days Brand's kicked the drugs and debauchery for Buddhism, yoga and social revolution. He's so dedicated to spreading the truth through his comedy he has his own You Tube channel [i]The Trews[/i] and he's named this tour the [i]Trew World Order Tour[/i].

It's no coincidence the name of the show harkens to the term 'new world order' which refers to a call for a dramatic change to the balance of power and global governance. Brand has actively been using his star status to raise awareness of global political and social issues and the need for change for many years. "We've been told freedom is the freedom to fulfil our petty desires but TREW freedom is freedom FROM our petty desires," his press release states, "After a life of individualism and showing off, Hollywood, ruining broadcasting corporations and elections Russell Brand has decided the only way to change the world is to be part of the crowd. Collectively, as a crowd, a horde, a mob we can change the world."

Don't think for a second a comedy show by Brand will be all nothing but seriously anti right wing diatribe. It's absolutely delightful how he can go from insightful social commentary, to bawdy and cheeky, to hyper intelligent and then downright absurd. Sure, you might learn something at his gig, but you'll also laugh your pants off. Tickets for Russell Brand's [i]Trew World Order Tour[/i] go on sale on Tuesday June 2nd, with the Brisbane Entertainment Centre show happening on Thursday 22nd of October.
