I love exploring and discovering new places in my neighbourhood. Having been a resident of Kelmscott for almost 3 years, I am only starting to make up for lost time by getting out into my area and learning more about it. For most long-time Kelmscott residents, is probably not much of a big deal, but for me I felt like I had discovered treasure. If you're a relatively new resident in the Kelmscott area or if you ever find yourself in this area, be sure to pay a visit.

Located on the corner of Orlando Street and River Road, not far off the Albany Highway, has plenty to offer – entertainment for the kids, lots of space for large gatherings or for the dogs to run around, great facilities for working out or simply a place to unwind and take a breather.

was once the site of Kelmscott Pool. To capture the historical significance of this area and bring people's memories of Kelmscott Pool to life, a beautiful story wall was designed with the assistance of local school children and community members. It was actually through this wall that I learnt the story of how Kelmscott got its name: it was named after Kelmscott in Oxfordshire, the birthplace of the first Anglican clergyman in the country, Thomas Hobbes Scott. Not only are parks designed for exercise and recreation, but they can also provide some insightful and fascinating history lessons.

This park is the perfect place to bring the children for a good run around. There are two playgrounds within very close proximity of each other. The Canning River runs behind the park and the kids will have plenty of fun playing here, although it is important that they are supervised by an adult at all times.

Upon first visiting, I was enchanted by all the trees here. There is definitely no shortage of shade which is great if you're down here during the hotter summer months. Towards the end of summer, you'll find plenty of families gathering here having picnics and barbeques and making the most of the shade.

If you're looking for somewhere new to work out, you will love . Make part of your after work running route or take advantage of some of the facilities such as the stairs in the pavilion area and incorporate box jumps and stair runs into your workouts. If you really want to challenge yourself, Kim from Kimando Fitness runs fitness bootcamps here three times a week. Having gone to a few myself, I can say that they will definitely challenge you and put you through your paces but at the same time everyone is very friendly and Kim is a fantastic trainer who is tough but encouraging.

For tennis lovers, or anyone wanting to try the sport out, Kelmscott Tennis Club is located close by on River Road. Having grown up in a tennis family, I know from experience that being part of a tennis club is a fantastic way to make new friends and to travel around the state. Their annual memberships look like really good value for money as well – only $95 for playing membership, $25 for non-playing memberships and $220 for a family membership.

Another major facility is the Kelmscott Hall, which can fit a maximum of 400 people. If you're holding a function and need somewhere to host it, consider getting in touch with the City of Armadale Council to hire the hall .

To get to , you have the option of a 15-20 minute (1.6 km) walk from Challis Station or a 10-minute bus ride from Kelmscott Station. There is also plenty of car parking.

Being home to a number of events, namely the annual Kelmscott Show , is the perfect hub for locals to get involved in the community.

Personally, I am looking forward to visiting this place more often, getting involved in community events and utilising this place for exercising and relaxing with the surrounding natural beauty. It is places like this that truly make me feel at home. For Kelmscott locals, I highly encourage you make the most of this place. And for everyone else, I encourage you to find similar places in your own neighbourhood.
