Rusden Wines have an unassuming presence from the street. Located just out of Tanunda, a single sign hung on Vine Vale road placemarks the entrance to a short driveway down to the cottage and cellar door. That is where the magic happens.

'Benchmark are interactive wine sessions held at Rusden cellar door on the first Friday of every month. It's about trying a different variety each month, learning together and sharing the passion. Throughout 2014, each Benchmark evening will focus on a different wine variety. April will take guests through Malbec and blends, Chardonnay in May and on to Cabernet, Shiraz through June, July and many more throughout the year.

The Rusden cellar door is purpose built around the original cottage wood-fired oven (circa 1880) with a long history catering for Barossa pioneers. The long table set alongside the oven offers a space for guests to come together and share an experience, tasting notes, nibbles and stories. A family space for a family business. From the wine inside to the artwork adorning the labels on the outside of bottles, it's all about family at Rusden. There are a few helpers with different DNA but they're just as much a part of the family, and guests at Benchmark are welcomed as one of the same. For the family of your own, there is a grassy area, toys and play equipment available for the little visitors.

Primarily offering single vintage, single varieties, the true colours and nuances of each grape are evident in Rusden wines. There is nowhere to hide. Highlights on for tasting at the moment include the 2005 'Sandscrub' Shiraz, 2009 'Boundaries' Cabernet and 2010 'Chookshed' Zinfandel. Though the foodies might dispute it, the Zinfandel is one to stand alone, no food pairing or deep thought necessary. If playing croquet with flamingos in the Queen of Hearts rose garden were bottled as wine, this is it. Playful, perfumed and a little bit quirky, good drinking any time.

There's a good chance you'll be able to taste the full range on any given day at Rusden. Museum releases are always available to try at the cellar door and likely to be poured for you by one of the hands that made it.

Benchmark runs 5-7pm on the first Friday each month, tickets $50. Bookings are essential, more details on the Rusden website .
