Many years ago, all there was on Magill Road in St Morris were a couple of pizza bars, a mercato, and a fish and chip shop. Nowadays, more than half a dozen cosy little restaurants have created a little foodie precinct for themselves. At the heart of this collection is Rusco and Brusco. An old storefront has been connected to the small house alongside and revamped into a classic and stylish Italian dining experience.

I love the old school Italian interior design they've got going on inside. Warm wood and leather furniture, wooden floorboards and high ceilings evoke an unmistakeable old-world Adelaide charm. The prints on the walls and decorations ooze a restrained but casual Italian design ethic in which everything is beautifully simple. Rusco and Brusco has a homely and welcoming feel.

Enrico and Orietta Ferraro founded Rusco and Brusco over three years ago. Having been part of the successful Cibo coffee chain, they struck out on their own to realise a dream of bringing their favourite Italian food to Australia. 'Tigella' is a thin, four-inch round type of bread typically found in the Apennines region of Northern Italy. These small breads are traditionally filled with a spread made from lard with rosemary and garlic but are also enjoyed with a wide range of savoury or sweet fillings. The 'gnocco fritto' is the fried version of tigella and is lighter, crispy, and fluffy.

We were delighted that our Antipasto entrée platter came with some of each style of bread to try. I always like the platters at Italian restaurants. They're a great way to compare the different chefs behind the kitchen doors. This platter is an excellent way to start a meal. The cured meats are sliced almost impossibly thin, the buffalo mozzarella is fresh and smooth and the pickled veggies are bitey yet fresh.

For mains, we opted for pasta alla bolognese and chicken scaloppine al marsala.

I wish I knew how to make Bolognese sauce like Enrico. The meat is so fine and tender, yet hearty. The rich sauce envelops the fresh pasta perfectly. Spoon a few spoonfuls of grated parmesan over the top and you'll be enjoying a Bolognese dish that's about as authentic as you can get in Adelaide.

The chicken scaloppine marsala is the classic dish of tender chicken medallions smothered in rich marsala and orange sauce. I'm always a bit hesitant with marsala in recipes, it's one of those ingredients that's far too easy to overdo. This sauce has an excellent light marsala touch that balances well with tangy orange flavour, rich olive oil and herbs. The roast potatoes on the side are deliciously crispy.

Drinks wise, there's a long list of hot and cold drinks, juices, and smoothies. Of course it wouldn't be an Italian restaurant if it didn't have 15 different styles of coffee! The wine list is tight but there's plenty of beer options and a small range of Italian liqueurs.

Their lunch options include panini and piadina or focaccia with fillings - or salads. All are reasonably priced and great for a grab and go lunch option. Don't forget they also do authentic wood-fired oven pizza and awesome soups like the oh so unforgettable classic – minestrone.
