On the old-fashioned drag of Castlemaine, The Run Rabbit Run Cafe retains the likeness of an old shop from many, many moons ago. With church pews as bench seats lining the walls and numerous sized tables stencilled with style, The Run Rabbit Run Cafe features a large rabbit doing just that on the wall.
It's a pretty tight fit and I had to get up to enable a pusher to go through to the back tables, but that small inconvenience outweighed by the quality of the home-made food.
It was quite dark in the cafe, so when I first saw the price of the breakfasts such as smashed avocado and eggs dishes for around $10, I thought I needed to put on my glasses. They have the typical sorts of popular breakfasts you would find in most places, a nice selection of lunches, plus very inviting pastry dishes on display.
They serve their 'famous' rabbit pie which I passed on. In my imagination, the owners live on a farm where they can source local fresh meat due to the negligence of our predecessors who bought these rascally creatures to Oz.
Between us, we tasted the very fat home-made sausage roll, tasty home-made spinach and ricotta roll, smashed avocado with lightly dressed rocket and a scrambled egg dish with sourdough. Bottles of water are available as well as many organic drinks. My son enjoyed the lightly sparkled lime and lemon organic sparkle drink; my daughter ordered iced chocolate (a decadent drink with chocolate ice-cream and chocolate topping lining the glass) and my friend bought a drink as well. For the three drinks and four meals it cost only $46. We thought that the waitress must've made a mistake because that's about the price that I would expect a couple would pay for breakfast in a city cafe.
Lots of great specials. Event the salmon is less than $16
As well as the favourable cost, each of us really enjoyed our meals. The kids turned their noses up at the idea of spinach but it was a very subtle taste. This was served with a very tasty homemade tomato relish.
The Run Rabbit Run Cafe also hosts 'Drinks with friends' every Friday afternoon from 4 PM. Just turn up for a low-key get-together; it's like an old school social night in a cosy cafe. Drinks or coffee and yummy hot snacks are served.
