Last December had the privilege of chatting to Jon George from triumvirate, RÜFÜS (AKA RÜFÜS DU SOL). Covered a bunch, including awesome new album 'Bloom', recent ARIA, plus rapid ascension. Admittedly, fumbled a bit. Hiccups including: i) questioning him about another band's music ii) (essentially) asserting they ripped off the 90's. In my defense, hadn't eaten for days, due to...well, spare you the details. And besides, on holidays! At the beach! Nonetheless, admittedly, indefensible assumptions were made. However, Jon being the consummate gentleman, interview an absolute pleasure - for me.

This world-renowned, 2 x ARIA Award-winning band comprises Jon (keyboards), Tyrone (vocals), James (drums). Born from a confluence of tastes - initially, between Tyrone & Jon; subsequently headhunting James. In terms of those aforementioned assumptions: sounds I relished as a young clubber (akin to RÜFÜS's), somehow extinct! Asking how they managed to "unearth all that hidden information", Jon proposed "a resurgence in an appreciation of that era". Furthering, they "get references to New Order". In retrospect, I backed this poor sod into a corner. Did I not? That is, Jon & Co. didn't resurrect dance music. Just mastered it.

Inspiration for Bloom, fondly attributed to Berlin. Defined as "an ode to our time there". Completely unfamiliar with Berlin, Jon enlightened me - "They're so open over there...everything they've been through, they're just really embracing of all culture, and particularly different types of music". "And just the way that they really have a high..uh, put such importance on the depth of sound and the sonics of music...we really...so appreciative that we got that time over there to explore it ourselves and get indulgent..." We discussed the album's overall concept. Personally associating it to the "urban club scene", Jon concurred - "You know, when you're going out. And just that feeling of walking into a dark, clubby room. And...uh, just the energy in the air".

My best attempt to describe the album - makes you feel alive. And, given their recent ARIA (for track 4: "You Were Right"), I'm not alone. Jon, describing this win as "a pat on the back from the industry". Given their success, evident they're onto something. Indefatigable enthusiasm? Clean-cut image? Jon put it down to something else - approach. "We're just making music that we wanna make". Elaborating, "What we try and do with our lyrics...yeah, a lot of the time they're based around relationships, because it's easy for us to, sort of, put ourselves in that position. Even if it's just a relationship between a brother and sister. Or a relationship between friends. Or if it is a girlfriend-boyfriend relationship...it's easy for all three of us to be there".
