THE sublime Passionfruit and White Choc Cheesecake with Tofu Ice-Cream - a must

Tucked away upstairs within an arcade off the main street of Leura, lies a gourmet haven for vegans and food allergy sufferers.

Here you will find cheese-cake, cream toppings, ice-cream, frittata and sour cream. If you think vegan food has to be boring, think again. Miraculously, Rubyfruit Vegan Cafe and Bakery has all the fun, adventure and decadence without the sin. If heaven had a cafe, this would be it.

Rubyfruit cupcakes: fun without the sin

Darlings of the Blue Mountains food scene, Rubyfruit owners Amanda and Simone, were the 2012 winners of the Blue Mountains Business 'people's choice award'. It's not hard to see why. According to Amanda, the perfection of their cheesecakes took many trials. Starting out selling cakes at market stalls, their business elevated with demand. They now have the distinction of operating the only vegan eatery in the Blue Mountains and one of only two vegetarian eatery's in the area.

In reality the food scene has a ghastly underbelly. Like so many other commercial enterprises, it is built on exploiting someone or something less powerful, particularly factory farmed animals without legal rights.

At Rubyfruit, one can eat with a clear conscience. A sign indicates tips will be given to an animal charity. Hearts decorating the shop window at first seem odd until one realises: vegan eating is a true combining of love and food, passion and charity. In this self-indulgent, selfish old world (or so says the cynic in me) there's something commendable in that.

Yet, one does not have to be vegan nor an idealist to enjoy a meal here.

So... what's the fuss all about? Sample the passionfruit and white chocolate cheesecake and you'll have your answer. If I don't come true with the goods, you can have my head on a platter.

The passionfruit and white choc cheesecake - again

Rubyfruit specialise in egg-free, dairy-free vegan baked goods and light snacks. The offerings range from their house specialty - a variety of baked goods including gourmet pies, sumptuous cheesecakes and cup-cakes to savoury wraps, the house burger, soup, salad, juices, hot beverages and more. Your cake can come with tofu ice-cream or cream (the vegan version) and meals are served with a choice of salad.

The service is efficient, friendly and gentle, the premises clean, bright and unpretentious. But the real reason to come here is the food. Offering something far more innovative and adventurous than the standard cafe fare, Ruby Fruit Vegan Cafe and Bakery is a stand out from the crowd.

My personal fave is the passionfruit and white chocolate cheese-cake with tofu ice-cream. I've also heard rave reviews about the breakfast - your choice of scrambled tofu, gluten free toast, big breakfast (veg snags, bacon, organic beans, spinach and tomato) or banana and pecan pancakes. The pies and mushroom burger are popular and the Mexican dish with fake sour cream and a choice of corn chips or rice is delightful.

The prices here are very reasonable considering the higher cost of alternative ingredients - and don't forget this is Leura - with meals starting at $10 for a pie with choice of rainbow or garden side-salad.

With the amount of people with food allergies these days, Ruby Fruit addresses a big community need. You can get a meal that is meat, fish, dairy and egg free and some items on the menu also have no wheat, sugar or nuts. With dairy and wheat allergies the most common food allergies in the world, there is a desperate need for more of these kinds of eateries.

Rubyfruit also make cakes to order, perfect for anyone catering for vegan or allergy prone family or friends. All bakery goods and some of the wraps are perfect for takeaway.
