Event & Village Cinemas in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing have announced a brand new cinema program that they will screen exclusively in Australia: The Royal Opera House 2017/18 Live Cinema Season. This season will be featuring filmed performances from the world-renowned Royal Opera House in London. Enjoy the very best opera and ballet from the iconic venue, captured in jaw-dropping detail for Australian audiences to enjoy as if they were there themselves.

Presented exclusively, six incredible operas and four beautiful ballets will screen across 14 Event cinemas nationwide and five Village cinemas in Victoria and Hobart from October 2017 - July 2018.

The program kicks off with Mozart's classic The Magic Flute on October 7, which is sure to excite seasoned opera-goers and newcomers alike.

"We are thrilled to be bringing the Royal Opera House Season to our cinemas. The opportunity to provide our audiences with access to the most glorious operas and beautiful ballets on the big screen that capture every detail is a true privilege," said Event Cinemas General Manager of Alternate Content, Alison Deboo.

"The Royal Opera House productions are nothing short of outstanding. These exclusive screenings alongside Event Cinemas are the next best thing to being there," said Village Entertainment Manager of Alternate Content, Sally Mason.

"I'm thrilled that we're able to stay more closely in touch with our Australian audiences during the year through our Royal Opera House Cinema screenings. Every performance at the Royal Opera House is an exciting event but on the evenings when we film for broadcast into cinemas around the world there is the most extraordinary atmosphere both on and off the stage," said Royal Opera House Chief Executive, Alex Beard.

Program Screenings:

October – The Magic Flute
Kicking off the screenings this October will be timeless Mozart opera The Magic Flute (7, 8 and 11 October). Starring Roderick Williams as the bird-catcher Papageno, Julia Jones conducts this spellbinding production breathing new life to the glorious classic following the rescue of Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night.

November – La bohème & Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Screenings continue in November with Puccini's La bohème (4, 5 and 8 November). Conducted by Antonio Pappano, this new production stars a superb young cast including Australian soprano Nicole Car, Michael Fabiano and Mariusz Kwiecien in the Italian classic chronicling the lives of young artists living in the Bohemian fringes of 19th century Paris.

November will also see the program's first ballet, with Christopher Wheeldon's exuberant Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (25, 26 and 29 November). Inspired by the much-loved Lewis Carroll book,Wheeldon's Wonderland features Alice getting swept off her feet by the Knave of Hearts, on the run for stealing tarts, plus countless strange creatures including a tap dancing Mad Hatter.

December – The Nutcracker
Take the family for a magical day out this Christmas with Peter Wright's The Nutcracker (16, 17 and 20 December). Danced to Tchaikovsky's magnificent score, the beautiful classical ballet will take audiences for a wonderful Christmas adventure alongside Clara and her enchanted Nutcracker doll.

February - Rigoletto
Returning in 2018, Event Cinemas will screen David McVicar's acclaimed production of Verdi's tragic opera Rigoletto (10, 11 and 14 February). This potent tragedy of cursed court jester Rigoletto, his daughter Gilda and the Duke of Mantua will star Dimitri Platanias, Lucy Crowe and Michael Fabiano.

March - Tosca
Drama, passion and fabulous music take centre stage in Puccini's operatic thriller Tosca (10, 11, and 14 March). With a star cast, Jonathan Kent's enthralling production captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800, featuring police chief Scarpia, one of opera's most malevolent villains.

April - Carmen
Bizet's ever-popular opera Carmen (7, 8 and 11 April) is given a fresh perspective in iconic Australian director Barrie Kosky's highly physical production. Originally created for the Frankfurt Opera, Kosky's far-from-traditional take stars Anna Goryachova giving new voice to the endlessly fascinating central character.

May - Macbeth
Phyllida Lloyd's 2002 production of Verdi's Shakespearean opera Macbeth (19, 20 and 23 May) is a richly hued spectacle conducted by Antonio Pappano. With an incredible cast including Anna Netrebko, Zeljko Lucic and Ildebrando D'Arcangelo, the Royal Opera's production uses Verdi's 1865 Paris revision, including Lady Macbeth's riveting aria "La luce langue."

June - Manon
Kenneth MacMillan's powerful modern ballet Manon (2, 3 and 6 June) is a stunning telling of Manon and Des Grieux's tragic love. Based on the 1731 novel Manon Lescaut by Abbe Prevost, the Royal Ballet's modern masterpiece is set to music by Massenet.

July – Swan Lake
The Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season comes to a magnificent finale with Tchaikovsky's magnificent classic Swan Lake (21, 22 and 25 July). This new production featuring additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett, is the perfect close to the season.
