Dinner out should always be a special occasion though sometimes, unfortunately, it can be hit and miss. A recent dinner in the Royal Hotel, Gatton's dining room was, however a huge hit. We had made our booking prior to the evening but on arrival, a polite and efficient staff member sailed us past our alloted table and sat us at a much better positioned one.
As we settled down to peruse the menu, an ice bucket and wine arrived and was positioned out of the way, yet within easy reach. The menu caters for a variety of tastes and the only problem was choosing which of the mouth-watering dishes we would order. Entrees of fresh, natural oysters accompanied with a zesty lime vinaigrette and 'Trio of Prawns' (six huge prawns cooked in three different ways) was an excellent start to our meal. Entrees devoured and dishes cleared away, we were served 'Lamb Medallions with a Red Wine Jus' and the 'Baby Octopus, Prawn and Avocado Salad'. The lamb melted in your mouth and was accompanied by crisp season vegetables. The salad was huge and delicious, the dressing a triumph.
The Royal has a wonderful dessert menu but we passed on that as the meals we had eaten were extremely filling. The ambience of the dining area is wonderful. The recently updated decor and comfortable but smart furnishings make the surroundings very pleasant. The lighting is perfect for dining, not too dim and not a glaring flourescent light in sight - much to my relief. The staff were excellent. Friendly and efficient and very obliging. Enjoyed our night very much and will certainly be going back.
