I write for Weekend Notes and I take photographs, usually sunsets and sunrises. Occasionally I include my photos in my articles. I like to promote Geelong, and activities around Geelong.
There is something for everyone at the Royal Geelong Show. And it's the biggest four day show in country Victoria. What type of people will you meet at the show? Produce growers, artists, musicians, entertainers, animal breeders, and more.
Most of the entertainment at the show is free. See the animals and watch the judging of the best of the best; best breed, best fleece, best grown vegetables, best made cakes and jams.
There are over 40 different competitions, including best beef and dairy cattle, dogs, sheep, poultry, art and craft on display, needlework, prime lamb and beef carcasses, best grain, woodchopping competitions, shearing and more.
My favourite part of the show when I went as a teenager was the rides. There are a lot of show rides, which all the children love and enjoy. The show rides are not free. Who doesn't like the carousel or the ferris wheel?
Try local gourmet produce, taste the boutique wines, and browse the local business displays. Home Innovation stalls share ideas and give home renovators food for thought.
Friday night and Saturday night there will be fireworks at dark, usually about 9.00pm. This is usually a fun conclusion to a big day at the Show. Bring your own food and drinks, or buy food and drinks at the Show. Lots of families make a day of it, pack a picnic lunch, and a picnic blanket and stay for the fireworks.
Meet the animals
At "Harry's Farm Yard Animal Nursery" you can meet rabbits, pigs, ponies, alpacas, chicks, lambs, goats, donkeys and calves. All the animals will be ready for a pat or cuddle so go say hi. The Animal Nursery is open from 10.00am to 5.00pm every day of the show.
Watch dogs competing for "Best dog in the show" and "junior handler" as some beautiful breeds of dogs perform. Show times - Friday 16th October and Saturday 17th October from 9.30am.
Beef and Dairy cattle will be judged - this year the featured Beef Cattle breed is Belted Galloway. The featured Dairy Cattle breed is Guernsey. Exhibitors from all over Regional Victoria will compete for their best Beef and Dairy Cattle. The "All Australian Holstein Friesian Qualifying Spring Dairy Show" will also be a fantastic display of Dairy Cattle.
At the Royal Geelong Show you can watch as the horse events are held. See a display of beauty and agility as the horses and riders perform in the Show Ring and the Showjumping arena. Competitions take place over the four days of the show and include various breed classes, show jumping events, the Novelty event, and harness ponies.
The list goes on. There is judging on poultry, sheep, shearing competitions, dairy goats, budgerigars, canaries and pidgeons.
The site of the original showgrounds was in East Geelong, south of Eastern Park. The showgrounds were bounded by Ryrie Street, Garden Street, Myers Street and Normanby Street.
In October 1891, the second showgrounds opened on a new site, which ran south from Ormond Road to St Albans Road.
The showgrounds were moved again in 1907, to the new Geelong Racecourse. The Agricultural Society shared the Geelong Racecourse until the current Geelong Showgrounds were established. The current site of the Geelong Showgrounds was established on the 35 acre site on Breakwater Road (where it is now) in 1954.
Rides from Gentle to Scary
Try a gentle ride on the carousel (merry go round) or be terrified and thrilled as you experience some of the scary rides like the Crazy Coaster, the Sky Flyer and the Cha Cha.
