In between Dingley's houses and the busy Westall Road Extension is a small reserve protecting indigenous remnant woodland vegetation. The 3.9 hectare Rowan Woodland Reserve is a dog-friendly (on-leash) patch of bushland with several sandy tracks that traverse through the interior of the reserve and around the reserve's perimeter.
The reserve has pedestrian access from Teralba Close and can also be accessed by walking past the adjacent sports ovals, with parking available off Rowan Road near the tennis and netball courts.
The tracks through the reserve pass through two woodland types: Coast Manna Gum / Narrow Leaf Peppermint Heathland Woodland, and Swampy Woodland. The undergrowth contains lots of native shrubs, grasses and bracken, including interesting species such as the Small Grass Tree.
The
Kingston City Council website has a short brochure that describes the four species of eucalypt found in the reserve, along with information on other native species that can be found. The reserve is home to eight species of orchid and several species of native lilies. The best time to try and spot these interesting wildflowers is in spring.
The perimeter tracks pass by the sports grounds on the northern and eastern boundaries and the houses on the southern and western boundaries. Along one fence line is a series of artwork by local school children.
Although small, Rowan Woodland Reserve is a lovely little patch of bushland to wander through in the heart of Melbourne's busy south-eastern suburbs.
