A cabaret celebration of all the silly things we do for love
Last night, I was fortunate enough to see an absolute gem of a show in Songs for Lovers (and Other Idiots), which is currently playing at The Butterfly Club in Melbourne's CBD.

Brought to you by Michael Roulston and Sarah-Louise Young (hailing from the 'not so United Kingdom'), direct from a successful season at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Songs for Lovers is a one-hour musical comedy cabaret show, featuring Roulston & Young's original songs. Their music is fresh, the lyrics clever - at times sharp, at times a lament, but mostly not too serious - as they sing of love, and falling out of love; the good, the bad and the ugly of relationships.

While all the music is original, it nevertheless has a familiar feel - ranging from pop, through ballad-style, even occasionally sounding a bit soaring and epic, like a James Bond movie theme, or a bit 'stage musical'. But their numbers are always appealing, easy to tap along to, and even (when we're invited) sing along to.

Roulston & Young have been performing as a duo for a decade now, and it shows in their polished, professional, cohesive performance. They are a pleasure to watch and listen to, with their easy rapport and delightful harmonies.

Their witty song lyrics had us smiling from pretty much the first minute, and their banter and asides to one another was most entertaining.

Their song I Fancy Your Father gave us an early feel for the fun, quality performance to follow, and I'm finding myself still humming their catchy Walk of Shame a day later. Young advises us that their hilarious song Please Don't Hand Me Your Baby has been picked up by a cabaret performer in Germany, and it's no surprise it has global appeal.

One gets the feeling this duo has the potential to do much more, musically speaking, than small-stage cabaret shows, however, they seem to love what they do, so why change a winning formula?

This show will have wide appeal to an adult audience; so if you've ever been in love, fallen out of love, or wanted to fall in love, don't miss this show! It's an absolute delight.
