Rossini's 'Il Signor Bruschino' by Lyric Opera - Review

Last night I previewed Rossini's Il Signor Bruschino by Lyric Opera, now showing at Chapel Off Chapel until Sunday 12 June 2016. Book your tickets here .


Directed by Lara Kerestes, the basic plot is that Florville (Shanul Sharma) is in love with Sofia (Rebecca Rashleigh), who is the daughter of Gaudenzio (Matt Thomas) an owner of a high class fashion house. Sofia is engaged to Bruschino Jnr (Cameron Silby) who is locked up in Filiberto's (Raphael Wong) café for his unpaid bar tabs. Florville pretends he is Bruschino Jnr in order to secure Sofia's hand in marriage.


Florville forges a letter to Gaudenzio from Signor Bruschino requesting that he detain his son Bruschino Jnr until he arrives. Signor Bruschino arrives and rejects Florville as his son, and the ensuing drama continues as to whether Gaudenzio will allow Sofia to marry the man she loves, rather than Bruschino Jnr who is a drunken fool.


Il Signor Bruschino is a neat little 'bel canto' that runs for 75 minutes. I found it really enjoyable, colourful and comedic. I noted that no one wore lapel microphones, the vocal projection was sufficient and the orchestra was well conducted by Pat Miller to underscore the drama with a lovely Cor Anglais solo by Jasper Ly. The characterisation of Signor Bruschino (Bruce Raggat) was a highlight as were the beautiful voices of Rebecca Rashleigh and Shanul Sharma.
