This short 400 metre crescent runs off Federal Road (Melway map 50 A.7) and has a surprise ending.

It is a quiet street with footpaths on both sides. My walk was in Autumn and the only walker seen was enjoying a walk along one of those autumn-leafed footpaths.

Many trees showed their magnificent autumn colours. One front lawn was covered in leaves – a very colourful sight.

Many flowers were blooming. A fuchsia, geranium, bottle brush and a sweet alyssum bush were just four.

The most colourful were several Chinese lantern blooms.

Three nice garden lamps complemented their gardens, as did a statue overlooking a well-established garden bed.

An unusual tree was identified as a strawberry tree. It forms edible fruits. The berries bear some resemblance to strawberries but are not botanically related. It is also the national tree of Italy.

Many azaleas were flowering as were several abelia shrubs.

The only birds seen were a couple of magpies ground fossicking for food, with one finding an insect.

Some residences were older than most in the street, providing some interesting fences.

Few garden ornaments were seen, but those that were unusual. A meerkat, a blue gnome holding a crystal ball, a red bird and a metal cut-out wren on a fence.

One bird bath was seen, and a long-dead tree stump made a good pot stand for some succulents.

Other flowers seen were a Mexican orange bush, plumbago bushes, marguerite flowers and a group of society garlic.

A salvia hot lips plant was flowering with bright red flowers. They can also flower with white blooms or white with red tips, hence the name hot lips. A patch of calendula flowers, a member of the daisy family had a brilliant orange hue.

Only two rose bushes were photographed.

The surprise at the end? This was a food bank and a children’s street library with books and toys.

Rosedale Crescent is a no-through road with a path at the end to Ringwood Lake.
