A short 40-minute drive from San Francisco or San Jose, CA lies California's best-kept secret—the Tri-Valley area. The four cities in this region—Pleasanton, Dublin, Danville, and Livermore—are each delightfully unique.

For our stay, my husband and I chose , a boutique hotel in Pleasanton, CA. It is located on Main Street in downtown and only steps away from the city's many restaurants, shops, and bars.

This luxury hotel was built by the John Madden family in 2001. John Madden was a resident of Pleasanton for many years. After the hotel was completed, one would often find him enjoying breakfast there at the start of a day. In the evenings he loved to sit at the bar talking with guests over a drink. We knew with that history it would indeed be an intriguing place to stay.

The bright red awnings over the main windows are a striking contrast to the cream-colored Victorian building. The building sits on the corner of Main Street allowing the front room to have an excellent view of the downtown activity.

Stepping through the large wooden doors into the lobby, I was delighted to see a gorgeous arched stairway leading up to the second floor. The ornate iron and wood provide a perfect frame for the marble and granite in the lobby. One side of the staircase has an intimate sitting area, while the other side contains an additional sitting area facing the downtown. The lovely cozy bar with rich wood paneling is tucked in the corner.

We checked in and took the grand staircase to our room. The room was very spacious and decorated in soft sage greens—creating a restful ambience. A desk is provided as well as comfortable chairs giving a homelike feel. The king bed was luxurious and cozy. The turndown service each evening is an added bonus.

The bathroom is large with an oversized marble shower and whirlpool tub. After a day of touring and exploring, the tub was a welcome relief as were the luxury robes we slipped into afterwards.

On a chilly overcast day, we sat in the lobby on the comfy couches in front of the intimate fireplace. The warmth of the fire along with a hot cup of coffee provided a perfect way to spend a few hours. I felt that I was sitting in someone's living room, not a hotel lobby.

Breakfast is served in the main lobby. We enjoyed fresh fruit, pastries, and my favorite, smoked salmon. We were tempted to linger in the dining area but there is so much to explore in the Tr-Valley area we were anxious to begin.

The Tri-Valley area is beginning to be known as a foodie paradise as well as a wine lover's destination. There is an abundance of different cuisines to sample, museums to captivate, and outdoor activities to enjoy.

is a very pleasant place to stay in Pleasanton, CA.
