Perth people may recognise Ros Thomas's name in connection with her role as a columnist for The West Weekend, or for her long-running career in journalism and current affairs, but she's the first to say she's pretty ordinary.

Thomas, who's just launched a best-of book of her columns with UWA Publishing, Was it Something I Said, will chat at Koorliny Arts Centre's Stories on Stage event on June 4 about writing, motherhood, careers and "having it all or having none of it".

She says her columns "lift the lid on ordinary life" and were the result of an editor asking her to write a weekly column about "what women were thinking".

A mother-of-three, Thomas says she thinks about her column "every waking minute" and her desk contains a thick file of clippings, drafts and pages torn from magazines that might contain a worthy idea.

"I'm always brooding on the next column," she said.

She's looking forward to sharing highlights from her writing career with the audience and will also read from her book.

Stories on Stage has really taken off at the centre this year, with Amanda Curtin, Ian Reid and Stephen Scourfield attracting people from as far as Joondalup to the southern suburbs event. What sets it apart from other author events is the theatre setting, complete with theatre lighting and comfortable raked seating.

Authors lined up for the rest of the 2014 Stories on Stage program include poet Annamarie Weldon in conversation with The West Australian books editor Will Yeoman, Annabel Smith and Kirsten Krauth, and historical fiction author Michelle Diener.

Stories on Stage starts at 7pm in the centre's main theatre and costs $15, which includes supper (the home-baked treats are a big drawcard).

Books will be available to buy on the night and one copy of Thomas's book will be given as a door prize.

Bookings are essential on 9467 7118.
