The wonderful City of Sydney created a small yet meaningful project to remind us to have a positive mental state for our own well being. Especially with our youth.

The Root of Happiness Tree is a mental health project displayed on a tree in Belmore Park, opposite Central Station, created by the City of Sydney Youth Services.

The event began on October 2nd where people were encouraged to write 'What makes you happy' messages on circular pieces of cardboard which were attached to the tree. The project will be on display for only two weeks, so pop by and have a look if you can.

It is a simple, yet powerful project that could be recreated in your own neighbourhood to assist friends, loved ones and all in your community to have a positive mental attitude.

Our current society has become quite disconnected in many ways, creating some if not serious mental health problems. Reaching out and connecting with others helps people know they are not alone with issues throughout their lives. It gives hope to some when they are a little lost in a time in their lives.

Celebrating and placing your energy on small acts of happiness refocuses your brain to look for more happiness in your life. The momentum builds at each step and will eventually create a tipping point when happiness is a way of life, or mostly.

Creating your own The Root of Happiness Tree in your neighborhood would be uplifting and fun.

Grab some burlap and wrap it around a tree trunk. Then wind some natural string around and around the burlap to hold it place. This will also give the messages a place to be tied onto without damaging the tree.

Make a whole heap of circles about the size of a bread and butter plate. Put a small hole at the top and attach some string or ribbon to be able to tie on the tree. Hand them out to neighbours and ask them to draw a happy smiley face on one side and their message of 'what makes them happy' on the other side. Drawing a smiley face automatically makes you think happy thoughts. Encourage anyone to share their own messages and ask them to tie it to the tree. Make it bright and colourful.

Who knows what positive events may happen in your community or whose life you may change.

A small community project which brings people together and opens this subject up for discussion.
