As a running Birthday theme of mine I try and do something fun or different each year.

Over Halloween I passed a sign that said 'trapped in a room with a zombie' and although intrigued, I never looked into it any further. The event came up in conversation one night and I was surprised to see how many friends would have been up for it, whether they wanted to or not. I looked it up online and to my delight it was open all year round.

The whole process was very casual and easy. A full room consists of 12 people, to get a private room you must sell 12 tickets. Originally I was a little concerned as a couple of friends were unsure and I did not want to loose any of my own money putting a deposit or more down. However, it turned out that my name was put up as a private party on their website and people who wanted tickets just clicked on the event. If I didn't have 12 by a generous dead line then the remaining tickets were to be sold to the public. This took a lot of stress of the organising, I just told friends what to do and if they were serious they bought tickets and if not, then no harm done.

In the end I got 10 tickets and 2 were bought by another couple who may have found it a little awkward coming in with a group that all knew each other but never the less, they were good fun.

The website does not give much away other than the fact you are going to be trapped in a room with a zombie for an hour.

On arrival we were greeted by a scientist who took us through all the rules and procedures. We were told that only 32% of people who enter the room get out 'alive.'

The aim is to solve puzzles and riddles which all lead and link together to finally get you out of the room. There are lots of distractions to throw you off but the main one being the 'zombie.' Every 5 minutes an alarm goes off and the zombie who is chained to the wall can reach a little further. At the end of the hour the zombie's chain is long enough for it to reach the door, and everyone in the room.

Our group came very very close to finishing but alas we became the majority and got eaten. Much to a couple of my friends' relief the aim isn't to scare the hell out of people, it takes place in a well lit room and concentrates on clue solving. The zombie makes things more intense and gets the adrenalin up but no body cried or wanted to leave, even if they were made jump.

Over all 90% of my group loved it, and 75% said they'd do the other rooms the company had to offer, which includes 'Still Hungry' and a new 'Al Capone' type room coming soon.

I had a great time even if I was zombie meat. It was a different and great idea to do as an event or team building activity. Worth every penny. Room Escape Adventures are not only in Chicago so check if they're in a city near you by clicking here!
