After two successful seasons in 2017, Rooftop Cinema returns to Luna Park Sydney for a third season, in Autumn 2018. This nightly program of retro classics, Hollywood blockbusters and action-packed thrillers, is now showing and will run over the Easter Long Weekend and throughout the NSW school holidays until 30th of April.

You may assume that an outdoor film festival will be showing old films at premium ticket prices, but Rooftop Cinema offers as many brand new releases as it does cult classics.

For example, consider the line-up for the Easter long weekend. You've got 80s hit Ferris Bueller's Day Off on Good Friday, Oscar-winning animated film Coco on Easter Saturday, The Greatest Showman on Easter Sunday and Thor Ragnarok on Easter Monday.

Other standouts from the new release (and critically acclaimed list) include I Tonya, Dunkirk, Lady Bird, All the Money in the World, The Darkest Hour and The Phantom Thread. Families are also well-catered for with the likes of Mary Poppins, The Incredibles, Back to the Future and the latest Star Wars instalment. There's a different film screening every night, so check the program , plan ahead and book your tickets online to avoid missing your preferred film.

The Experience of Rooftop Cinema

Luna Park has created an intimate rooftop space above the Tango Train attraction, complete with comfortable seating and licensed Candy Bar, for the full cinema experience.

For most sessions, doors open from 6.30pm (with the film screening from 7pm) and it's wise to arrive early as the seats are unallocated. You'll want to 'nab' the best spot and get yourself settled in with drinks and snacks, though all seats have great views of both the inflatable screen and the Ferris wheel and harbour beyond. As you arrive, you will receive your wireless headphones - the unique drawcard of Rooftop Cinema - and you can adjust the sound to your liking. 'Silent' cinema is a nifty concept, as many people find in-stereo sound at the cinemas, over-powering.

Things to Consider

Rooftop Cinema is advertised as an all-weather event and as with most outdoor events, you'll have the best experience on clear nights but this can't be guaranteed. The night we visited to watch The Post, there was inclement weather and we were given FREE ponchos but it's also advisable to come prepared for anything, with a jacket for autumn harbour breezes. (Oh, and you can hire blankets from the Candy Bar for a small fee.)

If you want to make a night of it at Luna Park, the precinct's waterside restaurant The Deck is offering a special pre-movie, two-course $40 menu, with parking for an additional $9. We were also given a bonus 2-4-1 drinks voucher at The Deck, with our movie tickets. A nice bonus!

Other specials being offered this season at Rooftop Cinema include Pink Wednesdays, dedicated to chick flicks such as Spice World and Mean Girls . You and the girls are invited to dress up and wear pink for a chance to win a special prize and Apple Thief Cider will be serving up plenty of pink lady cider throughout the evening.

Should you bring your kids to Rooftop Cinema? It's really up to you. There are some great family movies showing, as mentioned, and you might want to tie in a night at the movies with an afternoon of rides at the Park's school holidays' FunFest . And if you do wish to bring your babies and toddlers (2 and under), there is a Babes in Arms offer of FREE entry.
