Peonies, or peony roses as they are sometimes called, have a very short season. In Australia, this season lasts from the October to the middle of November. Peonies grow in Asia and Europe and increasingly, peony farms have also become popular in parts of Australia. Peonies need cool climate and frost to grow to their full beauty. If the climate is too warm they will not open their tightly formed buds and won't reveal their fully-fledged beautiful petals.

Peonies are considered a very special flower in China, where they have been cultivated since the Tang Dynasty and are called "sho yu", meaning most beautiful in English. And that they are.

Peonies come in more than 30 different types and can be either herbaceous or tree grown. They come in single, double or semi-double petals, all producing large flowers with different hues of pinks, reds or creams. For more information on peonies please read here .

If you have missed the open days(2 weekends in November) for this year at Romswood Peony Farm, you will, unfortunately, need to wait until next year to see and perhaps pick these beautiful flowers. But you will have a whole year to look forward to the spectacle of peonies in bloom! Romswood Farm is a family-run flower farm situated amongst an established garden setting within the Macedon Ranges. Besides peonies, there are numerous other beautiful examples of flora, irises, and lavender for example, as well as a large number of beautiful old and young trees in various shades of green. It is the perfect place to have a picnic under the shade of one of the ancient trees, planted many decades ago.

During October and November, private tours can be arranged for groups of 10-50 people. Tours include Devonshire Tea, a guided tour of the farm and a visit to the gift shop. These can be the perfect outing for clubs, mothers' groups, social groups, extended family groups, or any other group you may want to bring along.
