Art Gallery of Ballarat are holding a fascinating exhibition called Romancing the Skull from 14 October, 2017 until 28 January, 2018.

Romancing the Skull will feauture skulls and skeletons as they are featured in Australian contemporary art, but it will also take sideways glances at historic imagery such as medieval Dances of Death, pirate flags, poison bottles and tattoo art.

Romancing the Skull coincides with Dia de Muertos celebrations, with the Day of the Dead Festival on 4 November. Australian audiences will be introduced to iconic prints from Mexican artist Josť Guadalupe Posada.

Other highlights include a Nuremberg Chronicle dating from 1493 depicting one of the earliest Danse Macabre (Dance of Death) images. Australian works will include works from Sam Jinks, Rona Green and Ben Quilty and specially commissioned works by Fiona Hall, Reko Rennie and Sally Smart.

Throughout the exhibition there will be events, talks, an educational program and school holiday activities.

The exhibition will be open daily from 10.00am until 5.00pm but last entry will be 4.00pm. Romancing the Skull is an event which is part of the Season of the Art program.

Come to Ballarat from 14 October until 28 January to celebrate all things related to the skull.
