The Roma Street Parklands is loved by the people of Brisbane as well as visitors from around Australia and the world. Most people visit during the day, however the Roma Street Parklands lights up at night making it a great night time destination.

Brisbane's summer effectively lasts most of the year and that means Brisbanites love to go out to enjoy the cooler evening air. With both decorative and safety lighting, the Roma Street Parklands is a lovely spot to visit at night any time of the year.

About the Roma Street Parklands

Opened in 2001, the Roma Street Parklands is the largest subtropical garden in a city centre. The park is 16 hectares of meandering paths, lakes, fountains, elevated walkways, flower gardens and more. It is a fascinating outdoor area to wander around.

Lights & Views

At night the lights come on. One of the most prominent are the lights behind the waterfall beside Celebration Lawn. This open area is popular for sport and exercise. During the day, you will see people playing team sports and at night there are usually a few boot camps using the grassy area, as well as the nearby steps for fitness activities.

There are several smaller fountains and water features throughout the park. Most of these are lit at night in often changing colours. The paths are also fairly well lit, with both safety and coloured lights.

The Roma Street Parklands also uses the borrowed view of the city. From several different locations around the park, you can see views of the high rise buildings of Brisbane.

Exercise and Activities

As said before, the area in front of the waterfall is popular for sport and exercise. Though of course, most people are just happy to walk around the park at night. For couples, it is a very romantic destination for a stroll.

There is an amphitheatre in the park which is used for a variety of performances, including the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble's annual Shakespeare in the park in August and September and Carols by Candlelight in December.

Barbecues, Picnics & Parties

The Roma Street Parklands have a number of barbecue and picnic spots. At night, the Lakeside Barbecues is the best location. This large barbecue area is beside the lake just behind the waterfall. There are plenty of covered tables here and several barbecues. It is permissible to drink here, as long as you don't drink from glass containers or bottles. Basically poor your beer or wine into plastic cups.

Of course, there are many other spots to spread a picnic blanket around the park, though the lakeside barbecues are the best lit at night.

Safety & Security

For some people there some concern about safety at night. As already said, most of the paths are well lit. In the early evening, the park is fairly busy so there are usually plenty of people around. People who live or work in the area often cut through the park as a shortcut.

You will also see security on patrol during both the day and early evening. So it is one of the safest parks at night.

Getting there

During the day parking can be a little difficult, but at night it is fairly easy to find parking, though it is paid parking even at nights and on weekends. Most of the parking spots are off Parkland Boulevard, but at night you should also be able to find parking along Wickham Terrace.

If you are coming by public transport you can take the bus to Normamby and walk along the cycle path to the park. From Roma Street Station you need to walk through the train station. They provide a little free ticket to pass through the station to make it easy to get to the parklands. Of course, if you are arriving by train you don't need this, as long as you exit the train station on the park side.

You can also walk up from the city, but be aware it is a fairly steep path up the road to the park, even if it is not that far.

Overall

There are lots of reasons to visit the Roma Street Parklands at night. It is a romantic place to wander hand in hand with someone special, a nice place to exercise, a fun spot for a barbecue or party with friends, or simply just a cool spot to visit.
