This summer the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) has a fun free activity for families to participate in called Roll Around the Block. This creative journey is all part of the galleries Melbourne Now exhibition currently running across The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia and NGV International. It aims to celebrate the latest in art, architecture, design and performance in Melbourne and highlight how creatives and visual artists contribute to the society in which we live by creating a unique and dynamic cultural identity.

To celebrate Melbourne Now Children's Festival, kids are invited to embrace their inner Man Ray or Cindy Sherman and grab their camera (or borrow their parents camera) and hit the tarmac for a "Roll Around the Block". Based on the simple premise of kids 'shooting a roll of film', children are encouraged to take 24 photos during an outing, adventure or excursion which captures their view of the cityscape. Through the limitation on the number of photographs, children are inspired to slowly observe and record their environment, while learning basic photography and numeracy skills.

Then the photos can be entered into the photography project by parents using the hashtag #rollaroundtheblock and the lucky selected and shortlisted ones will have their photograph featured at the National Gallery of Victoria. What an amazing honour to have your work or your child's work showing between those prestigious walls. Parents are invited to upload their children's experiences of Roll Around The Block from now until 25 January 2014 to be considered for the exhibition. Shortlisted photographs will be on display from 18 – 26 January 2014 and will be well worth a look at even if you don't know the young photographer.

The gallery will also proudly host a workshop in the Melbourne Now Community Hall where children will have the opportunity to interpret photos as art using a range of creative materials. The ladies from the popular blogs tiny & little and Meetoo , Natalie and Kate will be running this hands-on creative morning on Friday 24th January 2014. The workshop titled Digital to Art will allow children to explore their Roll Around The Block (or someone else's) digital images and reinterpret them as an art work. Not only does it sounds like amazing fun but what a unique and interesting set of skills the children will be focusing on and developing.

The people behind tiny & little and Meetoo would love you to join in this unique photographic project for the National Gallery of Victoria and encourage your children to capture the city and its people from their personal perspective. They need you, your friends, family and neighbours to roll around the block with them to make this happen.

So get involved. Holidays and summer are both here. Melbourne is awash in the after glow of the festive season and it's a great time to have a big or small adventure with the kids in charge of capturing the memories instead of you. Remember simply have your little ones take 24 photos during a walk around your 'block' (or somewhere else), select your favourite photos and finally upload them to Instagram or Facebook with the hashtag #rollaroundtheblock . Feel free to visit www.meetoo.com.au/roll-around-the-block for more guidelines and tips.

What are you waiting for? Get rolling!
