Fri 07 Nov 2014 - Fri 20 Mar 2015

This summer, Rolf Binder Wines will be hosting Friday Pizza Nights once a month from November 2014 through to March 2015. Firing up the wood oven and setting the classic Barossa long table, the Rolf Binder hospitality is friendly, welcoming and unforgettable. Wind down with a good glass of wine, gourmet tastes and relax as the sun sets and long shadows fall from the palms of Seppeltsfield road .

Stuart Oldfield of Handmade Catering has crafted a menu to delight all diners at Friday Pizza Nights. Guests will enjoy a charcuterie entrée, choice of pizzas for main and a selection of 'sweet things' for dessert. A range of Rolf Binder wines available for sale on the night will be able to offer the perfect accompaniment to any dish or discerning connoisseur.

Cynthia of Rolf Binder says "It's an opportunity to share a fun night with many locals as well as visitors to the region.  The long table set up enables groups to meet new people and we've even had some local guests offering to give visitors a ride back to their hotel at the end of the night!  The sense of community spirit is really special at these events and that's why we enjoy living where we do.  Rolf is a strong believer of enjoying food and wine together at a table, so we're glad we have the opportunity to share that with others too".

The story of the winery dates back to 1950 when Rolf Heinrich Binder and his wife, Franziska, immigrated to Australia. After a stint working on South Australian railways, Rolf and Franziska started picking grapes in the Barossa in 1953 and in 1955 purchased a Langmeil Road winery. The business was renamed 'Veritas', from the Latin "In Vino Veritas" - in wine there is truth. The winery has been passed on to the next generation and name changed from 'Veritas' to 'Rolf Binder' in 2005 to honour the late Rolf Heinrich Binder who passed away in 2003.

After more than 60 years of history in Barossa winemaking Cynthia and the team at Rolf Binder aim to continue to share those stories and experiences with their visitors.  "There's definitely a blend of 'old' and 'new' with the history room full of old memorabilia flowing through to the new tasting room, showcasing a wide range of new wines produced by the second generation.  Many visitors come to find our 'Bulls Blood' wine, a Shiraz Mataro blend that dates back to 1967 and a wine that has a bit of a cult following today.  So much in fact that we have now installed an amazing sculpted bull at our entrance to symbolise our signature wine".

The story of 'Bulls Blood' goes back through Rolf Binder's Hungarian heritage where 'Egri Bikaver' (Bulls Blood of Eger) is to Hungary what Shiraz is to Barossa. While 'Bikaver' is now restricted for use as a specific regional name, Rolf Binder holds the naming rights to 'Bulls Blood' in Australia and continues to produce exemplary examples of this iconic wine from locally grown fruit. That 'sculpted bull' Cynthia mentions holds a commanding presence at the entrance to Rolf Binder Wines and the theme is unmistakable throughout the cellar door, from the decorations to the bold flavours of the wine. Local Barossa sculpture artist Joel Zimmerman has posted a video showing the entire build and installation process of the bull here .

When asked of any previous highlights from pizza nights and barrel hall winter feasts, Cynthia recalled "We've enjoyed so many special moments with our guests during these events over the years, so it's difficult to note any one in particular.  Coming together at the long table is really festive and fun". Last year Rolf Binder hosted a group of 30 family and friends the night before a couple's wedding and note that "the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many of our guests returning for subsequent Pizza Nights (and taking food home!)".

Spring is well and truly upon us and with summer just around the corner, what better way to celebrate the end of the week or start of the weekend? Friday Pizza Nights at Rolf Binder are a terrific opportunity to sample some of the Barossa's best food, wine and hospitality amongst new and old friends alike.
