If you're looking for a fun, challenging and social way to work out, you could do a lot worse than a Rugged Outdoor Group Activity Involving Navigation and Endurance, otherwise known as rogaining.

Best described as a more intense form of orienteering, the sport was invented in Melbourne in 1947, before being codified in 1968.

In rogaining, teams of between two and five people navigate between checkpoints, using only maps, compasses and feet. While they can plot any course they like, they must make it back to base within the allotted time period, which ranges from six to 24 hours. The more checkpoints visited and the speedier the return, the more points that are scored.

The best rogaines are all about variety. Venturing amongst forest and plain, travelling during day and night, and experiencing both freshness and fatigue, a person can't help but feel stimulated.

Yet one of the great things about this sport is that it can be appreciated by casual and committed folk alike. If you simply want to enjoy the great outdoors with a few friends, choose the short option and take it easy. If, on the other hand, you're keen to push your body and mind to the limit, assemble some like-minded acquaintances, do some training and then let rip on the big day.

With the Australian Association holding events almost every month, this is something you can throw yourself into sooner rather than later. So get cracking!
