Reflecting its founders' vision of producing a healthy flatbread menu using sustainably produced, local food that connects the farm, family and community, the Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. in Canmore is a warm, welcoming restaurant serving delicious pizzas, pastas, soups and salads.
Its open kitchen and artisan pizza oven allows you to watch your meal being freshly produced using local organic flours, free range organic meats and eggs, local vegetables and Ocean Wise (sustainable) seafood.
Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. takes only a handful of advance bookings every night so the majority of diners are seated on a first-come, first-served basis. When we arrived, at about 6pm on a Saturday, there were no tables for two available, so we were seated at the bar.
For starters we chose the antipasto to share, comprising a delicious array of local deli meats, artisan cheeses and vegetables with warm garlicky flatbread and a balsamic and olive oil dip. We followed this with a Genoa salami pizza with cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and bocconcini cheese, and a pizza from the specials board, with braised pork and sweetcorn.

The thin, crusty flatbread base really sets off the scrumptious flavours on the topside of the pizza. We washed everything down with a couple of pints of Grumpy Bear from the Grizzly Paw Brewery and India Pale Ale from the Big Rock Brewery.
There are more than 10 varieties of pizza to choose from, including filled (calzone) pizzas, available in regular and large sizes. We found the regular size was just right for one person. Gluten-free pizza bases are also available, made with a blend of brown rice and quinoa. Prices range from CN$14 for a regular pizza to CN$25 for a large pizza.
The choice of fresh pasta dishes changes every few days, and there is a small selection of salads and soups, which are both accompanied with organic flatbread. Appetizers include baked flatbread topped with wild smoked salmon, Quebec mozzarella cheese and lemon horseradish drizzle.
Interior of the Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co., Canmore
Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. has a rustic feel to it, with its dark terracotta walls, simple wooden tables and chairs and logs stacked next to the large pizza oven in one corner.
There were plenty of families enjoying their meals when we were there. On Tuesday evenings during the off-peak season, children can try making their own pizzas, rolling out the dough and making their own toppings.
As well as take-outs and catering services, Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. will also organise pizza-making parties for children or adults.
Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co. also has restaurants in Vancouver and Banff. The Canmore restaurant is located off 8th Avenue between 10th and 11th Street. Canmore is a lovely town in the Rocky Mountains about one hour and ten minutes' drive west from Calgary along Highway 1.
