Thank goodness another world class musical has finally wended its way to Brisbane! We've been a bit starved again for a few months so its nice to start the new year with one as entertaining as the Rocky Horror Show.

As seems to be the way with ticket sales these days, even on the QPAC pre-sale list I still somehow managed to miss out on buying decent tickets. Being my usual all or nothing self, since I couldn't get the seats I wanted, I gave up. As luck would have it, however, I managed to win tickets through the Courier Mail to a special dress rehearsal show last night.

If you've seen the movie, you pretty much know the drill. If not, be prepared for a wild, corny, rude, hilarious romp of a show that cannot be taken too seriously. I don't want to give anything away but I will say that the cast of Frankenstein place easily steal the show.

The lead characters of Janet and Brad are well played by Tim Maddren and Christie Whelan Brown. In my opinion though they are outshone entirely by Erika Heynatz as Magenta, Kristian Lavercombe as Riff Raff, Ashlea Pyke as Columbia and Craig McLachlan looking all too comfortable in suspenders as Frank N Furter.

The lighting, sets and music are all what you would expect for a world class production but isn't poor QPAC getting tired?

Everytime I see a show at the Lyric Theatre I curse the poor acoustics and tight seating. I really think it is time that Brisbane raised the bar and improved its theatre options, perhaps then we wouldn't be so long between shows.

The other thing that never ceases to amaze me is what they are now charging to see a live show. My family are all avid theatre goers and we try to get to at least one big show every year so I've watched the progressive rise of seating costs.

I must confess as much as I loved last night's production, when compared to some of the other big shows, such as Wicked, I'm not quite sure I can form a favourable comparison, especially considering QPAC are demanding up to $250 a ticket for Rocky Horror. Surely you could at least throw in a complementary program for that!

So all in all: great show, my commendations to the cast and crew. If you are lucky enough to have tickets in your possession you are in for a fun night.

A final word to anyone booking tickets in the future, if you ever get offered the opportunity to view a dress rehearsal or preview show, grasp it quickly. The quality of the performance is still top notch and you get the rare opportunity to see the unseen crew doing some of the hard yards to produce the magic that we see on the stage.
