One day trip brings another.

I was looking for a day trip that wasn't too far out of Brisbane and would be a good place to visit. I settled on Rocky Hole in Mount Mee.

Rocky Hole is about an hour and a half from Brisbane. The road through Samford and Dayboro was very picturesque. There were undulating hills and green meadows. Cows in the pastures and cute homesteads along the way. Samford is lively and full of lovely coffee shops, art galleries and more - try The Flying Nun .

Find the heritage trails and museums to amuse you for as long as you might want to spend time there. If you are travelling on a Friday visit the markets. The Farmer's Markets are held every Friday from 2pm-5pm, at Millen Farm, 2204 Mt Samson Road, Samford, Queensland 4520. They are always such a treat.

We turned into the D' Aguilar National Park and followed the road which becomes a dirt track soon after entering the park. It is not a bad road and could be done in a saloon vehicle but we have a four-wheel drive car which is recommended. Of course, having a four-wheel drive does not preclude some hiccups – read all about it further on.

There is a small car park and a boardwalk/ path of 200 m down to the natural swimming hole which is called Rocky Hole.

On the day we visited, there were no people around so we had it all to ourselves and we enjoyed a picnic perched on a rock, looking and counting the terrapins that were bobbing up and down.

Access to the water is reasonable, though a little restricted. The temperature of the water was probably around 20 C and there was a steady flow of fresh water streaming into the swimming hole. Swimming is refreshing but some care needs to be taken with the surrounds as it is entirely embraced in large granite boulders which can be slippery. Also, the depth level varies so if you go there with children they need to be carefully supervised.

We explored the eucalypt forest nearby and followed the track for the stream leading out of Rocky Hole before the task of clambering over the boulders defeated us. There are no facilities there but there is a camping ground some kilometres away.

We set off back and along the way spotted some yellow-tailed black cockatoos. We are always excited to see these birds so we stopped and quickly got our binoculars out to have a better look. They looked so at ease perched on the top of a dead tree. Sadly, not near enough for a good photo.

As I was approaching the car to set off I noticed that one of the back wheels looked a little flat - that, of course, explained the hissing noise I had heard earlier. It is always at this point that we turn to our trusted mobile phones to see if we have a signal just in case we needed to be rescued...

We set about changing the tyre which is a messy and very arduous job but we were lucky enough to have the help of a lovely couple who stopped and offered to help us.

On the return journey, we saw a couple of places that we would gladly have visited had the hiccup not occurred. A welcome glass of wine at Ocean View Estates and the possibility of a long lunch or dinner at the interestingly named Entangled .

The joy of setting out with a place in mind is that often the journey is the source of a lot more.
