I adore anything with a little mystery and intrigue. This is why I was pleasantly surprised by my discovery of some rather unusual objects during my sunset walk through Kyeemagh, a suburb that sits along Botany Bay. I'm talking melting masks, pots of dice, cotton webs on trees, and other things that had me thinking 'Alice in Wonderland' by the beach.

Turns out these installations are a part of Rockdale Art Festival, an event running throughout April and May, which I probably wouldn't have known about if it weren't for this. This is happening between the 10th of April and 8th of May 2016, with the sculptures around only until Sunday the 24th. Wishing I had discovered them earlier! With any luck you'll get the chance to check them out in the next couple of days, and if not, this is something to keep an eye out for in years to come.

These 'Sculptures by the Bay' bring to life one of my favourite concepts; that of the outdoor art gallery. Art, especially the three-dimensional sort, can bring magic to a space, pose a new perspective on familiar places, and get you thinking about new ideas. I love this, especially in a natural setting like Cook Park in Kyeemagh. The installations integrate well - in some cases complimenting the scene, and in others, using it to stand out. The backdrop of the beach and the bay inevitably became a part of the creations. Or did the creations become a part of the place?

As the sun descended, I felt I'd stumbled across these at a golden time of day. Vibrant hints from these final rays of the day illuminated the interplay between light and dark across finer details, which added to my intrigue. I hear this is also optimal photography time, for those who like to get their artsy on.

While there is limited time left to see this year's outdoor gallery, the Rockdale Art Festival will continue for about two weeks, so there is still opportunity to see what else this celebration of local creativity has to offer. In particular, there are still productions such as 'The Boy From Oz' in Rockdale Town Hall, and exhibitions of entries to the local photography competition entitled CamerART around for a while longer.
