Robin Eley has a personal connection with Adelaide which gives us an opportunity to indulge our senses. Consider Singularity, a tasty appetiser before the arts deluge that brings Adelaide Fringe and Festival to our Southerly shores.

The collection is based on the use of social media and its influence on behaviour, connectedness and relationships. In particular, Eley focuses on the concept of modern isolation with the increasing use of social networking sites. The results are a series of luscious images portrayed with the use of oils on linen.

The collection begins with a succession of paintings depicting various cellophanes. I'm not sure if it was the artist's intention but I saw glimpses of detail within the cellophane. Of course you can't verify the source because there's no way of unravelling the folds to reveal the interior. This draws parallels with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. You can never really be sure of what's happening on the other side of the screen.

The paintings evolve to a series of nudes wrapped in the transparency that cellophane offers. The artist's brush strokes are barely audible which makes for a visually spectacular experience. The works are provocative yet subtle so you can appreciate the art without feeling assaulted.

You can meet the artist at the gallery on February 26 from 2.15pm.
