Wollongong is a coastal city located south of Sydney along the Grand Pacific Drive, and upon arrival you will be welcomed to an array of activities to enjoy... most of them being free!



There is so much on offer making this a perfect drive and day trip with attractions including beaches, gardens, lookouts, walks, discovering history and more. There is certainly something for all interests, making this drive a must-do.

Enjoy the coastline with surfing beaches, rock pools, swimming beaches, or try something adventurous such as sailing, hand gliding, paragliding, abseiling and more.



Explore the natural wonders with the Wollongong Botanic Gardens, surrounding lookouts and nature walks and be sure to check out the restaurants, cafes and bars at this seaside haven.

If you are a history buff you will enjoy exploring the Lighthouses and the stories they tell.

There is also the Wollongong City Gallery which showcases one of the best regional art collections in New South Wales with special focus on colonial and early Australian art, Aboriginal art and artefacts, contemporary art and Asian artefacts.



Explore multiculturalism at the Nan Tein Temple which is the biggest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere. Here you can wonder through pretty gardens, take a guided tour of the temple or have an overnight experience.

Whatever it is that you enjoy, Wollongong certainly does have all interests covered!

There are many routes that lead to Wollongong and below is a list of some of the routes that offer different perspectives. On average It takes between 1 ½ hour to 2 hours drive from Sydney CBD.



1. The Scenic Route

This is one of the most breathtaking routes to Wollongong as you travel across the Sea Cliff Bridge, which is a major tourist site and it offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and cliffs as you drive.

If you are coming from Sydney CBD head towards Rockdale taking the A36 and follow till A1 passing Sylvania, Gymea, Kirrawee, passing Heathcote, continue on the Pacific Highway (A1) take exit onto Lawrence Hargrave Drive, then make sure you take a pit stop at the Stanwell Park Lookout.

After a short break follow Lawrence Hargrave Drive till you reach the mighty Sea Cliff Bridge and admire the views as you cross the bridge, continue following the B65 route and here Wollongong welcomes you.



2. The Countryside Route

This route is the longest but it is certainly rewarding with valleys, farms, the great country air and plenty of picturesque views to admire.

If you are coming from Sydney take the M5 and follow till it becomes M31 (Illawarra Hwy) from here you have two options which both offer country scenic views:

- The Old Hume Highway (B73) which leads you through the quaint towns of Braemar, Mittagong, Bowral. Once you have arrived to Bowral take the Tourist Route 15 then make a left to Illawarra Highway (A48) and follow the route through the winding roads to Macquarie Pass then continue to the Princes Highway (M1) then to B65 route which leads you to Wollongong

- Alternatively continue from M31 route then A48 through Sutton Forest, Moss Vale, Robertson through the winding roads of Macquarie Pass then continue to the Princes Highway (M1) then to B65 to Wollongong.



3. The Multi- Pit Stop Route

From Sydney CBD take the M1 route leading to Brighton-Le-Sands and follow the A1 through to Sylvania, Kirrawee, Heathcote, follow the M1 then take the Lawrence Hargrave Drive exit to Stanwell Tops Lookout.

After the pit stop continue back to the Princes Highway passing Maddens Plains, continue on the Princes Highway till you see Sublime Lookout sign- here you are welcomed to views of endless coastlines and walking tracks.

After stretching the legs continue back onto the Princes Highway which connects to Princes Motorway (M1) follow the motorway to the sign of Bulli Lookout which is located at the Panorama House.

After Bulli Lookout get back onto the Princes Motorway (M1) and continue down till you reach the Clive Bissell Drive exit, from here take the Tourist Drive 11 turning left onto Mount Keira Drive and turn into Queen Elizabeth Drive for lookouts and walking tracks. Then make your way to Wollongong following the Tourist Route 11 turning left at the Princes Motorway which leads to Wollongong.
