Wongan Hills can be found about 2.5 hours north-east of Perth. The Wongan Hills name originates from the Aboriginal name 'Wongan Katta', which means 'Talking Hills', derived from the wind that whispers through the hills.

The best time of the year to visit Wongan Hills is during the months of August to November, when the canola fields and wildflowers are in full bloom.

Wongan Hills is the home to 17 very rare wildflowers which are said to show their colours to the world during October. You can obtain a host of information of wildflower trails from the local information centre. According to one of the wildflowers experts, Ian Smith, the wildflower trail starts from Sharks Bay and extends all the way through Perth.

Outside of walking trails, one can also take a self-drive tour. One amazing area, which is just outside Wongan Hills, is the Gabby Quoi Quoi Look-Out. The road leading to the lookout point is narrow, but offers spectacular views of canola fields and wildflowers. The video above is one taken from along side the Gabby Quoi Quoi Road.

There are two primary accommodation choices in Wongan Hills. One is the Wongan Hills Hotel and the other is the Wongan Hills Caravan Park. The latter offers travellers the choice to hire a cabin or a lot for a caravan or mobile home.

The cabin offers all the basic needs to make your stay comfortable. The family cabin offers 4 beds, bathroom, kitchenette, and other amenities to make the family 'grouch free'.

Wongan Hills has a range of venues to have a good meal. The Bakery offers amazing food, exceptional coffee and snacks that will want you going back for seconds. If you find that some places are closed after 4 pm, then the Pub will be your best stop. Staff are friendly, food is plentiful and, of course, very tasty.

If you happen to make this the road trip for this year's adventure, then don't forget to drive through the town which is filled with heritage and amazing architecture. One such building is the Wongan Hills Civic Centre, which is also on the Heritage List.

The Wongan Hills Civic Center has years of history tied to it, honouring all locals that gave their lives in the wars. Their names are written on walls and monuments in their honour.

I spent two days at Wongan Hills and will definitely return in October where it is said to showcase the biggest wildflower exhibit. While some rare species only show up once every 4 years, there is said to be a farm that has a carpet of wildflowers where you can capture some amazing moments.

This trip can be a day trip, however, I believe a weekend adventure would be ideal, as there are many other little towns that beg to be discovered by the weekend wanderer.
