With the December holidays 'around the corner', many will be taking to the roads for a much-needed vacation. While Mum and Dad are creating that "list' and checking it twice, kids are dreading the hours they will be cooped in a car like a prisoner. Let's face it, car trips for kids are never fun!

So here are some ideas I either came across, or use successfully with our family, which you can use in your next car trip to make this trip a memorable one.
**
1. A to Z Australian Creature Feature List**

I found this list on a site called ' A Road Travelled' . It is free to download and it is perfect for keeping kids entertained while ticking off each animal they see. The one with the most animals ticked off, either at the end of the road trip or vacation wins.

2. Road Map

Print out a map of the journey you are about to take. Let kids hi-light all the roads you travel. And if there is a road which is not on the map, they can either write it in or draw it.
**
3. Car Trivia**

This may take a little preparation, however this is a great game for kids to learn about things around them. Using index cards write question relating to the place (and its surroundings) you are about to visit. You can also include 'spell words'. The one with the most correct answers wins! Prizes can also be given during the competition to keep kids motivated with the game.
**
4. Objective**

Select some objects to be spotted on the day. As you drive, kids can either blurt them out or can record how many objects they see.

5. Hum a Tune

This one has everyone in fits of laughter while we travel because the tune is well off the beat. However, that is what makes this game fun. One person hums part of a song they know. The rest try to figure out what tune it is. Sometimes you can incorporate rules such as calling out both singer/band and song title.

6. Add a Word

This is another favourite car activity of ours. One person starts with a word. The next person repeats that words and adds another word. The next person repeats the two words and adds a word. This game continues until one person forgets a word or repeats a word which has already been used before.

I hope you find this list useful. Please share with others who you know will be travelling. I am sure they will be grateful.
