Perth writer Barbara Gurney's debut novel Road to Hanging Rock launch attracted more than 120 people to an event at the Gosnells Knowledge Centre on Saturday, 30th November.

The event was attended by various writers and members of the arts community including fiction writer Rosanne Dingli and her daughter actress Ravenna Bouckaert, chairwoman of the Katharine Susannah Prichard Writers' Centre, Renee Hammond, poet Sioban Timmer and Perth publisher and owner of Jasper Books, Cate Rocchi. Also at the event was Gosnells MLA Chris Tallentire.

More than 70 copies of the novel, Road to Hanging Rock – published by Jasper Books, a division of Cate Rocchi Communications – were sold at the event as well as many collections of Gurney's recent poetry collection, Footprints of a Stranger.

At the event, Barbara talked about the geological rareness of Hanging Rock itself, a rural tourist attraction in the Macedon Ranges, central Victoria.

She thanked many for their support in the production of the novel and the launch including Lizanne Fernandez, of the Gosnells Knowledge Centre and her husband Graeme.

Road to Hanging Rock tells the story of Michael and Rebecca who experience the rock's supernatural pull in different ways. As they attempt to unravel the synchronicity of their episodes, they are drawn to each other. It is a riveting mystery offering an insight into what became of the two girls, Miranda and Marion, who went missing from Joan Lindsay's original story, Picnic at Hanging Rock.

In 2012, Gurney won first prize for Wide Brown Land in the Minlaton Show Literary Awards and for Purple in the Yarram Community Learning Centre Annual Literary Competition as well as being shortlisted in two others. This year her short story By Darkened Shore was shortlisted in Raspberry & Vines Short Story Competition. Footprints of a Stranger, Barbara's collection of poetry was published in 2012 by Ginninderra Press (Adelaide).

Copies of Road to Hanging Rock are available from www.barbaragurney.webs.com, The Well Bookshop (Applecross), Crow Books (Vic Park), Dymocks Carousel, Collins Booksellers (Centro Maddington) and Paper Bark Merchants Albany.
