Riversleigh is part of Lawn Hill National Park in north-west Queensland. This 10,000-hectare area was gazetted under the Queensland National Park and Wildlife Act 1975 in 1984 because it is the richest and one of the most important fossil fields in Australia.

Riversleigh Fossil Centre is free for locals who show their driving license, otherwise please go to the this website to find the admission fee to enjoy the Riversleigh Fossil Centre.

You will be welcomed by a big lizard at the front foyer of this museum. As you enter the museum, you can see a simulated tropical rainforest, a recreation of the Miocene period of 25 million years ago. Dioramas in this section are very detailed, complete with the flora and fauna of that era. Big ancient animals such as Dromornithids (the precursor of the emu) to small slimy ancient frogs and even ancient bat's teeth can also be seen here.

There is also a Riversleigh Fossil Centre Laboratory tour daily at 10am and 2pm for all fossil enthusiasts. In this tour, Alan, one of the tour guides, will show you how specimens are sorted and cleaned and fossils extracted.

There are more fossil exhibits with full descriptions and many other displays. There is area special for budding palaeontologists, a sandpit with hidden bones that children can dig up, some books about dinosaurs and more activities.

Pay a visit to Riversleigh Fossil Centre at the Outback Isa to learn more about fossils extracted from the nearby Riversleigh fossil fields.
