Have you ever watched a movie with a scene showing ice skating in the middle of a busy city in winter, and thought, I wish I could do that? Well now you can! The Momentum River Rink has returned to Fed Square for the winter school holidays.

While many people in North America and Europe take ice skating in winter for granted, it is still a novelty for us in the Southern Hemisphere.

The River Rink has been set up at River Terrace at Fed Square, with a picturesque backdrop of the Yarra River and the Melbourne city skyline.

The River Rink is open from 27th June - 19th July 2015, from 10am-10pm daily, so there are lots of opportunities to get your skates on. The Rink is fun for young and old, however children under 3 are not permitted.

Whether you are a seasoned skater, or have never skated before, you are sure to have lots of fun at the rink! 'Ice skating assistants', in the form of 70cm tall penguins, are available to hire if you (or the kids) feel like you need a helping hand until you get the hang of things.

There are also special events on certain days to really get you into the spirit of things.

'Skate With The Animals' - 10am-12pm each Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday.
Join costumed animal characters on the ice.
'Like Totally 80's' - 7pm-10pm every Tuesday.
Party like it's 1985, with music and costumes, 80's-style.
'Christmas In July' - 7pm-10pm every Wednesday.
The rink will be transformed into a Christmas theme.
'National Pyjama Day' - Friday 17th July (all day).
Wear your PJ's on the ice, when $1 of every ticket sold goes to The Pyjama Foundation , which helps children in foster care enjoy a brighter future.
'Watch Professional Skaters' - 12:45pm & 5:45pm every day.
Professional skaters from the Icehouse will showcase their skills for a 5 minute performance.

Make sure you wear warm, comfortable clothes and gloves. It's a good idea to bring a change of clothes for littlies, as they could end up pretty wet after a few spills on the ice!

Children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. All children under 10 must wear a helmet (these are supplied free of charge).

Tickets can be purchased in advance from Ticketmaster , or at the Ticket Booth on River Terrace (at Fed Square). Ticket prices include skate hire.

For more information, visit Fed Square website .

For some other ideas for hitting the ice these winter school holidays, check out the Winter Skate Festival at the Icehouse, or the Pop-Up Ice Rink in Ballarat .

If you get a taste for ice skating, the Medibank Icehouse in the Docklands, and the Olympic Ice Skating Centre in Oakleigh South are open all year round.
