This Christmas period Rise of the Guardians has the Christmas movie market cornered, but then it is the only one on offer. This really isn't a standard Christmas movie as it includes, the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Sandman, Jack Frost (Chris Pine), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and the Santa figure called North (Alec Baldwin). The movie also has an evil antagonist in the form of Pitch, voiced by Jude Law.

The evil spirit, Pitch, launches an attack on Earth in an attempt to scare the children, fill their dreams with nightmares and undermine their belief in Santa, the Toothfairy and the Easter Bunny. This movie has some particularly dark scenes which is why it is rated PG. I took a group of 13 year olds to the movie and they thoroughly enjoyed it, I also took a 7 year old who was very scared and subsequently had nightmares for a few nights. It depends on what you allow your children to watch generally as to whether this would be suitable. Pitch is a particularly scary character who epitomises evil and darkness. The fact that he haunts children's dreams makes younger children particularly susceptible to his brand of fear.

Overall, the movie is an enjoyable story with enough action to interest the upper primary school age child, it also has a deeper message that can be enjoyed by adults, including concepts like finding out who you are, what you stand for and what you believe in. It has a very positive ending and the 80 year 7s I took to the movie were all applauding at the end.

While I am sure the movie will have many critics, it is a hit with its targeted audience of children.
