Art on your feet
Anyone who thinks art galleries are just the preserve of Old Masters and stuffy sculptures will love the latest exhibition to arrive at the Art Gallery of WA, which is anything but boring. The Rise of Sneaker Culture has just finished touring cities in North America, and arrived in Perth on May 13th for its only stop in Australia.

With over 150 pairs of sneakers on display, in addition to photographs, films, interactive displays and marketing campaigns, this fascinating exhibition covers the history of sneakers from an early pair of 1860 spiked running shoes plus an original 1923 pair of Converse all the way to recent acquisitions such as a pair of Christian Louboutin sneakers, also spiked and covered in gold, and a pair from stiletto master, Jimmy Choo (sadly, heeless).

There will be historical displays from iconic brands such as Converse, Nike, Adidas and Puma plus items from celebrities and private collectors. You will also be able to gaze upon artistic collaborations between the sneaker companies and fashion houses as well as artists, musicians and celebrities.

While undoubtedly fun and interesting, this exhibition will also look at both the social and cultural significance of the things we wear on our feet, and how our shoes impact on our lives and identities, how we are perceived by others and how we perceive ourselves.

As well as self-guided tours and casual gazing, you can also join guided tours that will run every day from 2pm (Thursdays to Sundays). You don't need to book, but priority is given to those that do, and you can select a tour date here.

There will also be a competition running from the 5th of April called #mysneakerstory, which gives you the chance to win a trip for two to San Francisco simply by sharing a short video via Instagram. Find out more here.

Kids (6 and older) can also make their own custom decorated cardboard sneakers and add it to the growing display during the Sneaker Culture exhibition, every day between 11am and 4pm.

The Rise of Sneaker Culture is a free exhibition and will be running until September 4th, 2017.
