Classy food shopping in Chiang Mai
Rimping Supermarkets are a chain of stores that originated from a family business begun more than half a century ago in Chiang Mai.

The business has since expanded to include 9 supermarkets and smaller groceries around Chiang Mai - all dedicated to the same ideal of offering an enjoyable shopping experience - while providing the best in quality items.

I particularly like shopping at the Maya Mall branch. It has a chilled out feel, helpful staff, a wide selection of goods and high standards of hygiene consistently.

Rimping Supermarket at Maya Mall is located in the basement level next to the food court. It is a full-sized supermarket, unlike some of the smaller Rimping Grocery Stores, and has an adjoining eatery. Larger Rimping Stores often have attached coffee shops, or small restaurants with a selection of local and Western dishes.

Aside from this, Rimping Supermarkets have arguably the best range of imported and local goods among supermarkets in Chiang Mai - even easily rivalling the selections provided by big name chain stores in the West. This is surprisingly the case even in their fresh produce area. Many items, which are not grown in Thailand are frequently available - and of consistently good quality.

A great selection of local and imported produce

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Rimping Supermarket is its fresh produce section. The quality is consistently good, and the prices on organic food remarkably cheap. Furthermore they have a handy coding system that allows you to differentiate between organic produce items, general items and produce falling under other categories of chemical use.

I love the ability this gives you to make wiser food choices, and how it generally gives you more clarity into what you are purchasing and consuming.

A fantastic system of safer produce options

They have a few options for vegans and vegetarians. Think budget-priced (and very versatile) dried soy chunks, a range of tofus and tempeh, as well as some frozen mock-meat burgers.

Options for people with special food requirements

There is an extensive deli section as well, with a good range of imported cheeses, meats and seafood.

Because of the large range of fresh food items that Rimping Supermarket sells, they will often bring their prices on cut fruit and other perishables down of an evening to clear items. If you are looking for deals, after 7 pm is usually a good time to shop.

Grab bargains on reduced items

Rimping Supermarket Maya Mall also has a nice wine and spirits section, aside from the basic beer fridge.

The store frequently brings out a brochure with the latest products on offer and specials that will be on in the coming days.

Rimping Stores also have the Rimping Superplus Loyalty programme that costs 90 baht to join. This does include a lifetime membership, the points that you accumulate never expire and they can be traded for gifts. If you want to join just print out the application form available online or in-store and submit it with payment at the Customer Service Desk in the supermarket.

Each Rimping Store is a little different, so it pays to visit a few different ones. However, from each the same fantastic standard of shopping can be had.
