The Gold Coast is home to an eclectic mix of people and cuisine. A venue that has raised many an eyebrow since its opening back in 2016 is the irrefutable Rick Shores. Perched so close to the ocean, with views out to sea and across sand plains to the city of Surfers Paradise, it is easy to see why this perfectly located eatery is busy six days a week.

Head chef Jake Pregnell is the mastermind behind some of the most unique items on the menu, including the Roasted Pork Belly Egg Net Salad and the popular entree dish of 'Ricks' Fried Bug Roll.

The venue promotes shared eating with its Pan-Asian fusion dishes. There is tiered seating which is the first thing you will notice when you walk into Rick Shores. I have been told that the ocean-front prime seating is allocated to larger groups with an assortment of round tables - to continue this sharing concept. Couples are seated in the upper tier on bar style stools, however, the views are not compromised on this elevated level. Off to the side is a magnificent bar with scattered bar leaners and stools for those who want to knock back a couple of the delicious cocktails on the menu. I recommend the Old Salt signature cocktail; this is comprised of Lillet Rosé, Olive Brine, Vanilla, Peach Bitters, Prosecco and Salted Olives. There are nine cocktails on the menu to choose from, so you will definitely find something to your liking.

The ambience of Rick Shores during the day can be quite mixed. On one hand, the stone white interior and openness with large windows is a refreshing welcome given the phenomenal views. On the contrary (as a diner) when it is busy, it can be quite difficult to hear what people on your table are saying. That said, the service and quality of food is second to none.

I had the pleasure of attending Rick Shores just by chance as I was down the coast with some friends. I had already heard many good things about the venue and vowed to visit when I was back in Australia - I am glad I did. After a few hours on the beach, we decided to book a table and head in. We were lucky enough to be seated in the round table section and witness the waves crashing up against the rocks which was quite surreal.

As it was a warm day, thirty degrees to be precise, we opted for the house Rosé which was very light and fruity. Our waitress was very helpful with explaining the menu to us and after much deliberation, we all decided on the Roasted Pork Belly Egg Net Salad. The waitress did mention that the pork came out cold, which I was a bit sceptical about, assuming it would be warm crispy pork on a cold salad, however, I decided to cement my option and pray to god it satisfied my hunger.

After about fifteen minutes our meals all came out and looked delicious. I was extremely pleased with the salad and actually enjoyed the cold pork, which was a first for me. As I looked around the table we were all quiet, which is a good sign. Next time I am in Australia I will definitely be taking my partner to Rick Shores to enjoy an evening on the Gold Coast. I can only imagine the sunset from Rick Shores would be quite a spectacle and definitely a must.

If you find yourself in Burleigh Heads, do take the time to quickly call and book a table at Rick Shores. The venue does take walk-ins, but you might just find yourself waiting for a little while, so it is recommended that you book ahead, especially if there is more than two of you.
