Rice Queen is another swanky bar that has staked its name on Brunswick Street. As soon as you hop off the tram 112 from the city at stop 17, you need to be prepared and ready for Rice Queen heaven. If you're not in the mood to eat any Asian food, or to eat for that matter, then you must settle for something alcoholic to soak in the fascination of the busy vibe come here from 8pm on a Saturday night.
I can't believe it. I have lived in Melbourne for almost two years, and this is the first time (as a visitor to this great city) I have come across this establishment. If you're pondering along similar lines, you might be asking yourself the same question: "where have I been the whole time?" This is where Melbourne is easily the San Francisco and the New York of Australia.
This place just rocks. Full of busy staff that just have floristry written all over them. It does not feel like you're in Melbourne. One of my friends was running a little late, and come the time she arrived, I needed something to eat. Having brought take away inside (naughty I know) a group of us just hung around the main area until we sat down. The staff members eventually took the remainder of the take away, away.
One of the friends I made while I was living in Melbourne invited me here. She came here as part of a monthly Meetup group she is a part of, and this social club group meets for cocktails once a month.
The electric ambience at Rice Queen on Brunswick St
My lemon, lime and bitters was just refreshing. There was someone else in our group of four who had the same drink as me, and he also enjoyed it. My other two friends enjoyed their drinks as well. One had a fruity mocktail.
As soon as we finished our drinks, perched on a couch similar to what many people would find in their backyard of paradise, the staff asked us if we wanted more drinks. I would have said yes, yet there were a few grumbling tums in the house, and none of us were up for anything on their food menu. Our Rice Queen experience was cut short on this occasion. However, when I am in Melbourne again I will revisit this queen of love.
