Rice is an entirely appropriate name for a Chinese restaurant because it is the staple food of the Chinese. A typical Chinese family meal consists of meat and vegetable dishes placed in the middle of a round table for sharing by family members, each with a bowl of rice to balance the tasty shared dishes. My family would feel incomplete if we go without rice for a day. Located along Glen Osmond Road, Rice Chinese Cuisine offers a good range of Chinese cuisine featuring both familiar favourites such as Sweet & Sour Pork and more unique dishes like Ants on Greens. It is quite popular with the locals with many of them choosing to order food to take-away.

Despite what the name suggests, there are no ants in their Ants on Greens dish. The dish consisted of minced chicken, dried shrimps and mushrooms cooked in a sauce and served over Chinese greens. The soft texture of the minced chicken and mushrooms were a good contrast to the firmer Chinese greens with the sauce tying everything together. We thought the sauce included Szechuan Peppercorns as we were able to detect a hint of the tongue numbing sensation associated with the spice.

Rice's BBQ Honey Pork (Char Siu) was the dish that brought us to the restaurant. We were told that it is the best in Adelaide. The BBQ Honey Pork (Char Siu) offered at Rice is similar in taste to the ones served at hawker stores in Singapore, with a delectable char-grilled flavour and a hint of sweetness. While the meat is a bit fatty it was still very tender. It is also rather unique that the BBQ Honey Pork was served covered with a honey sauce, something we have not seen at other Chinese restaurants.

Also known as Har Cheong Gai (the Cantonese name), Crispy Chicken with Prawn Paste is a dish in which chicken is marinated in a prawn paste marinade before being coated in flour and deep-fried. This is one of my family's favourite dishes and we never fail to order it whenever we see the dish on a menu. The chicken was fried to golden brown with the crisp coating being a good contrast to the tender chicken. It also came with sweet chilli sauce to dip the chicken in but we prefer to be able to savour the prawn paste taste of the chicken as it is.

Rice's Jingdo Ribs dish had pork ribs that were cooked to perfection with the delectable sweet Jingdo sauce heightening its flavour. The ribs were absolutely delicious but we thought it could have benefited from being served with shredded lettuce to help balance out its rich taste.

Also known as Buddha's Delight, their Monk's Hot Pot consisted of tofu and a selection of vegetables cooked with a soy bean sauce in a hot pot. The name of the dish came from the fact that it was popular with Buddhist monks who are vegetarians. It had since become a popular vegetarian dish in Chinese restaurants. All the vegetables and tofu were cooked just right with the soy bean sauce subtly bringing out their flavour. If you would like to add a bit of punch to the dish, you can request for chilli in soy sauce to dip the vegetables and tofu in.

Rice's Anchovy Eggplant Hot Pot with Pork Mince is quite unique in its use of Chinese anchovies (ikan billis) as we had only seen it being used as an accompaniment to Nasi Lemak . The eggplant was soft but with still a bit of bite and the Chinese anchovies gave the dish a distinct slightly salty taste. It is best to savour this dish slowly as it comes out piping hot and stays that way for a while.

Ambience of the restaurant was pleasant with the tables spaced an adequate distance from each other. Off street parking is available at the back of the restaurant. We enjoyed 25% off our total bill by using the Entertainment Book Gold Card . Rice also offers a delivery service within 3km of the restaurant, with no delivery surcharge if the total bill is over $60.
