Ribs & Burgers launches new chicken burger menu
With such a growing presence of American style food in Brisbane, especially in party districts such as Fortitude Valley, it is not surprising that Ribs & Burgers is a popular chain restaurant in both The Valley and Woolloongabba. Acknowledging Australia's love of healthy alternatives in their restaurants, they have launched a new chicken burger menu with 3 great options.

About Ribs & Burgers

Ribs & burgers is a chain of restaurants found right around Australia with a couple of branches in South Africa and the UK. They specialise in US style food, which, as you can guess, means the focus on burgers and ribs.

But Ribs & Burgers manages to create a diverse range of offerings that have a wide range of appeal. Their burgers, in particular, are made with high-quality classic burger buns. They really understand what makes a burger appealing and have done their best to excel at this rather than try and turn them into "gourmet" burgers.

Most of their other offerings are also excellent, including ribs (of course), sweet potato fries and meals. Their burgers range from basic through to gourmet.

If I had to be disappointed by anything it would be the salads. Basically too much of the cheap stuff like lettuce and not enough of the good stuff. However, they do make an okay and healthy side to your meal.

The most popular options are the burgers but these are US style family restaurants with a full drink menu, including lots of beers and a few choices of wine. It is not the typical fast food or burger place that you find in Australia.

The trend in American food

There is a big trend, especially in party zones that attract young people drinking. In pubs, it is usually a combination of pizzas, fries, burgers and buffalo wings. Personally, I have trouble getting exciting by cheap pizzas and burgers.

But Ribs & Burgers does go beyond these places and the trends. For them, it is about the quality and presentation of their food. They also don't slavishly follow the US style, but use it as a reference point. In Australia, we are used to paying more for our food and expect to have options that are healthy as well.

The new chicken burger offerings

There are 3 new burgers on offer. The classic burger comes with two options, lemon & herb or chilli. We tried the lemon & herb option. This is a great tasting chicken burger where you can taste the herbs and lemon flavour, but there is also a lovely smokey quality to the chicken from the grilling process.

The other chicken burger that we tried was the crispy chicken. In fact, this is actually karaage chicken burger served with mayonnaise and coleslaw. The chicken was not overly crispy, which is actually a good thing when it is in a burger. This may be the secret behind why this is the most popular of their chicken burger options.

Personally, I preferred by lemon & herb chicken burger, but my friend liked the crispy chicken. Like their other burger options, people quickly find their favourite.

The verdict

Ribs & burgers is a great restaurant chain. It does attract a young crowd, but the choices are wide ranging. Prices are reasonable for what you get. In particular, the quality of the food is excellent.

Overall it fits between the cheaper options and full restaurants. You can come here for a quick meal, say before a movie (if you are going to the one at James Street which is just in front of the Palace Centro Cinema), or somewhere to eat and drink with friends before a big night out.
