Enjoy A Gourmet Meal In The Middle Of The Sunshine Plaza
Shopping centres are not really renowned for offering up gourmet food in a gorgeous setting. The Riba Kai Cafe Lounge however is a change for the better. Found in the middle of the Sunshine Plaza in Maroochydore, overlooking Cornmeal Creek and Sunshine Watercraft, this waterfront lounge wins out over anything else in the food court easily.
I didn't think I'd find a place like this in the middle of a shopping centre
The setting is lovely - it's right on the creek and on a good day you might get a breeze rolling through. The area is undercover as well. According to the menu the name 'Riba Kai', which means 'River Food' in Pidgin English, came from a competition the cafe ran with its customers in 2005. It suits the area perfectly.
There's plenty on offer from the menu from open grills, seafood, chicken ceasar focaccia, burgers, sandwiches, and even a range of kids meals. On my first visit I went with one of the specials of the day, the Maleny Focaccia - lightly toasted with chicken, avocado, tomato, brie, basil and mango chutney ($15). I added some chips for an extra $4. My father picked up the paster of the day, carbonara with garlic toast (small $12, large $14).

We ordered a coffee each at the same time and returned to our seat right above the creek. The coffee was fast the come out - the cappuccino was massive and packed a punch. Exactly what I needed at that time of the day. Not too long after, our meals came out. My foccacia was very tasty - the mango really brought it all together. For the $4 extra I paid I thought there would have been more chips but then again I probably wouldn't have been able to eat any more than I did - it left me pretty full. The carbonara I was told was just as good.
Riba Kai is right on Cornmeal Creek which runs straight through the Plaza
Being in the middle of a busy food court you woulnd't expect anything outstanding from the food court. Riba Kai is a lovely stand out form the run-of-the-mill fast food you'd expect to find in the centre of a busy shopping centre. Next time you're shopping up a storm at the Plaza, take a breath, grab a coffee here and enjoy the break.
